Purpose: In order to increase the number of CCRNs in our pediatric intensive care unit, the educator developed a CCRN review course. To incorporate principles of active learning, a game was created as part of the review.
Description: A poster board was used to create a game called “The CCRN Review Game.” The path of the game moves the participant from start (when the patient arrives in the PICU) to finish (when the patient is transferred to the floor). Questions were taken from a CCRN review book, and participants took turns answering the questions. If they answered the question correctly, they rolled the dice and moved forward. If they answered the question incorrectly, they did not roll the dice and did not move forward. In addition, events are written in some of the spaces on the game board. For example, a player might get to move forward an additional two spaces when the patient was successfully extubated, or might move back three spaces if the patient gets an infection. The first participant to arrive at the finish was the winner and was awarded a small prize. In large reviews, teams were used rather than individual participants.
Evaluation/Outcomes: The game allowed the educator to identify subject areas that needed additional review, and the questions used in the game often spurred additional questions from the participants. Participants repeatedly stated how much they enjoyed the game as an alternative to strictly didactic teaching methods. This competitive and active learning method helped make the reviews a fun learning experience.
