Purpose: Directing the staff's negative energy toward a positive change in the unit, utilizing each individual's skill and talent to enhance team spirit, identifying leaders and increasing recruitment and retention threshold.
Description: As a long time AACN member and an NTI veteran, I committed myself to change for a better work place. Inspired by musicians playing together in an orchestra, I was convinced that one person could not do all the changes--it had to be a team effor. The idea was brought to the director of 41-CCU; and with her approval, support from clinical coordinator and encouragement from nursing administrator, a "Circle" of excellence 41-CCU was created. There were a total of seven small circles surrounding the "Circle" and each represented a committee or a team. They were as follows; 1)administration and clinical team, 2)education committee, 3)performance improvement committee, 4)cost-efficiency committee, 5)retention-recruitment/positive action/sunshine committee, 6)schedule committee, and 7)environment/unit organization team. A poster for the "Circle" of excellence 41-CCU was created and posted in the unit conference room in November 2003, and sign-up sheets for various committees and teams were posted at the same time. Staff, nurses and unit clerks were encouraged to sign up and to become involved in the "Circle". At the end of March 2004 the "Circle" moved from the introductory phase to the dynamic action phase. The chairperson or leader of each committee/team began to meet with team members on a regular base.
Evaluation/Outcomes: Staff members signed themselves up and became actively involved in their various committees and teams. There were five RN level 4s; each chaired and led one or two committees/teams. The unit recuited many new staff and new graduates, and retention rates had exceeded the goals set for the third quarter of 2004.
