Purpose: Being the family member of a loved one in the ICU can be a frightening and lonely experience. All too often, our ICU waiting areas are unfriendly, crowded spaces with little thought given to their functionality and often no bodies present to help families find their way. To meet this need of helping families use their time waiting in a more therapeutic environment, our management team developed the "ICU Liaison" to help assist families of ICU patients.

Description: There are three ICU Liaisons that work in the waiting areas of the seven ICUs within Harborview Medical Center. They work ten hours a day in the busiest visiting times of 10am until 9pm. They are responsible for greeting and welcoming each ICU family, providing them with a family orientation guide, and can assist them with everything from finding a place to spend the night, to paging their nurse coordinator or physician.

Evaluation/Outcomes: Since the implementation of this program, our families have reported increased satisfaction in the areas of comunication with clinical staff, having needs met in a timely manner, and improved access to visiting patients.
