There is a Shona belief that when God created the hippo, the animal was so embarrassed by his appearance that he begged God to allow him to stay in the water all day. Shibori is a traditional Japanese textile art dating back to the 8th century. The artist first creates a design and then the cloth is stitched, bound, resisted, wrapped or gathered by hand. The cloth is then dyed in natural dyes. A traditional shibori apprentice studies for thirteen years. Shibori cannot be produced by machinery. It can only be created by hand using numerous labor intensive processes. This stunning Haori, or mid-length coat that serves as a light coat to be worn over kimonos, will make a fashion statement whether worn formally or with t-shirt and jeans.
