Damon Cottrell, RN, DNP, CCRN, CCNS, ACNS-BC, CEN, is chair of AACN Certification Corporation from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. He served two terms as chair-elect in FY2010 and FY2011 and secretary/treasurer in FY2009.
Cottrell — supervisor, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, Lewiston, Maine — enjoys a nursing career that spans more than 20 years.
A clinical nurse specialist and director of nursing at Washington Hospital Center’s coronary care unit and rapid response team, Washington, D.C., from 2006 to 2011, he served as clinical nurse specialist at Providence Health System, St. Vincent Medical Center, Portland, Ore., from 2005 to 2006; and Texas Health Resources, Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas from 2000 to 2005.
He held staff nurse positions in acute and critical care including Baylor Health Care System, Dallas, from 1989 to 1990 and Baptist Healthcare System, San Antonio, from 1988 to 1989.
Cottrell, who belongs to AACN’s Greater Washington Area Chapter and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, earned the 100 Extraordinary Nurses Award from the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing in 2008 and the Excellence in Clinical Education Award from Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and the Great One Hundred Nurses Award from the Texas Nurses Association in 2004.
Cottrell, who completed his doctorate of nursing practice at Robert Morris University, Pittsburgh, in 2010, earned Bachelor and Master of Science in nursing degrees from Texas Woman’s University, Dallas, in 1997 and 1999 respectively.
He holds national certification in critical care (CCRN) and emergency nursing (CEN) and as a clinical nurse specialist (CCNS).
