Maria Shirey, RN, PhD, MBA, NEA-BC, FACHE, FAAN is immediate past chair of the FY2012 AACN Certification
Corporation board of directors. She completed terms as the FY2010 and FY2011 chair, FY2009 chair-elect and
FY2007 and FY2008 director on the board.
Shirey — associate professor, graduate leadership/management program, University of Southern Indiana’s College of Nursing and Health Professions, Evansville, since 2009 — has held faculty appointments at the school and the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Lafayette, Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas, and Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, from 1980 to 2009. She was a critical care staff nurse between 1977 and 1986 with Houston-based Hermann Hospital and Methodist Hospital and Miami-based Baptist Hospital.
Recipient of AACN’s Circle of Excellence awards in 2003 and 2005, Shirey frequently contributes to Critical Care Nursing Quarterly, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Journal of Nursing Administration, Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing and Critical Care Clinics of North America. She also belongs to the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science, Midwest Nursing Research Society, American Organization of Nurse Executives, American College of Healthcare Executives, American Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
Shirey earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Florida State University, Tallahassee in 1977 and master’s degrees in nursing and business administration from Texas Woman’s University, Houston and Tulane University, New Orleans in 1986 and 1991, respectively. She has a doctorate of philosophy in nursing science from Indiana University, Indianapolis.
