Public Policy Rekindles a Flame for Nursing

Students in the Lakeland, Fla., area have the opportunity to meet with healthcare professionals during Career Academy sessions at Lakeland Medical Center.

By Debbie Laughon

As a nurse for 25 years, I have strong feelings about what makes a good nurse. These feelings have directly affected my efforts to encourage young people to enter the profession.

Discussing my role as a nurse touched very personal feelings about helping others, and I was often unconvinced that upcoming generations shared this goal. When asked, I was always willing to answer specific questions, but otherwise did not feel a need to carry the torch for nursing.

However, my two years as a member of the AACN Public Policy Work Group changed my opinion about the need to share the stories of nursing—stories about the hard work and the joys of making a difference. I wanted to share my experience in the hope that others will consider how they can personally contribute to the profession’s well-being.

My first year, the Public Policy Work Group developed a Public Policy Strategic Plan and identified public policy initiatives for AACN. We focused our discussions on critical care nursing and concentrated our efforts on how we could help advance our initiatives.

During my second year, we talked a lot about the shortage of nurses, the aging nursing workforce and the declining enrollment in nursing schools. These discussions made me realize that, if we didn’t take charge, there might not be nurses to make the difference in the future.

After I shared the work group’s discussions with nursing governance board members at my hospital, they began to consider ways to increase our visibility in the community, particularly among younger students who have not yet decided what they want to do. We began by investigating how the schools contact the hospital, what their needs have historically been and the future role we could play.

In the midst of our discussions about how to prepare for and manage visits, two schools called to request that a hospital representative speak to seventh- and eighth-grade students during their career week activities. Although we were not sure we were ready, we accepted both invitations.

However, scheduling a nurse away for a whole day posed a problem, so we decided to divide the time among three of the committee members. We were armed only with our desire to share and a poster that had previously been used for some other purpose. The presentations went well and convinced us that we could positively impress young people about our profession.

In follow-up discussions, the committee identified the need to develop a more structured plan, which would not only make spontaneous requests easier to manage but would also allow us to expand this effort to staff members who were not committee members. By involving greater numbers of professionals, we could also make more contacts.

The committee members applied their creativity to developing tools that would make school and community presentations easier for anyone who had the time. Included in a box of hands-on sharing “equipment” to take to the schools were stethoscopes, syringes and otoscopes to better teach the principles of “look, listen and feel.” A list of open-ended questions that could be used to stimulate discussion about the profession of nursing was also prepared. In addition, we compiled information about the profession such as the education process including schools, salaries and various areas of nursing that are unique, yet may appeal to future nurses.

Another tool we used was a puzzle—actually a picture of a nurse—to illustrate how a nurse is required to use every part of his or her body to meet the many needs of patients. For example, the ears, eyes, hands and nose are key to assessment; hands are also used to comfort a patient who is upset; and the brain is necessary for putting all of the components together to develop a holistic approach to caring for the patient.

The committee also had the opportunity to develop a Career Academy, a program that had been discussed for more than a year to accommodate requests for students to visit our hospital to observe healthcare professionals. The idea was to be able to share the concepts of healthcare with students in a controlled, safe environment without jeopardizing patient confidentiality and without risk to patients.

Students were chosen by school faculty to participate in the three-day, biannual Career Academy, which is designed to expose students to the various healthcare professions. In addition to tours of the facility, the students spent 45 minutes with each profession.

Because of our previous experience with the school visits, our nursing governance group was prepared to step into the Career Academy role. However, we take our session a step further by planning a mock code, which is a key focal point for our discussions and leaves an impression on the students. We also use the tools already developed. In addition, we emphasize the essential need for “caring” through listening, empathy and support throughout the patient’s path from illness to recovery.

Because of these programs, I know my role with AACN’s Public Policy Work Group has made a difference. I also appreciate the commitment by the nursing governance committee members to the future of nursing and healthcare.

I will no longer wait for those who have an intense desire to be a nurse to come in search of information—I will seek them out. The experience of sharing what it is like to be a nurse is almost as good as the feeling I had after caring for my first patient.

I encourage you to promote these types of programs to your local chapter or staff members. It is nursing’s challenge to paint the picture of the joys and pains of a profession that is as special to me today as it was that first day over 25 years ago.

Debbie Laughon, RN, BSN, DBA, MS, CCRN, is manager of the cardiac interventional unit at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, Lakeland, Fla. She is a member of AACN’s Public Policy Advisory Team and served on the Public Policy Work Group in 1998-99. She is immediate past president of the Heartland Chapter of AACN.

CDS Résumé Review Sessions Popular at NTI

The Career Development Services (CDS) team was excited by the response to its résumé review sessions at AACN’s National Teaching Institute™ in New Orleans in May 1999.

These personalized sessions were a new CDS offering at the NTI. Participants presented their résumés to Julee Bolg, CDS career counselor, and Kitty Scott, an experienced nurse recruiter.

Bolg and Scott reviewed more than 100 résumés and provided career counseling during the conference.

Following are some of the questions asked most frequently by participants about their résumés:

Q: As a staff RN, do I really need a formal résumé?

A: Polished, professional résumés provide strong first impressions to potential employers. Drawing on her experience as a nurse recruiter, Scott shared her thoughts about candidates whose résumé is incomplete or poorly written. “Every detail of the résumé, including spelling and format, is important. A hastily prepared or updated résumé could remove a candidate from consideration for a job. Recruiters are looking for a professional, concise and easy-to-follow résumé.”

Q: I have more than 10 years of professional work experience. Should I still limit my résumé to only one page?

A: If the content is relevant and concise, it is not necessary to limit your résumé to one page. According to Bolg, “many nurses have accomplished a great deal during their careers and this information should be conveyed to prospective employers. Nurses should provide a brief description of the unit in which they worked, their primary responsibilities on the unit, and any significant projects or committees on which they participated.”

Q: Why should I begin my résumé with a summary of qualifications or an objective?

A: Bolg and Scott shared with the attendees that recruiters may receive hundreds of résumés for each open position. The summary of qualifications or the objective provide “snapshots” of a candidate’s experience and interests, thereby assisting the recruiter in the screening process to quickly select candidates with the best qualifications for the position prior to reading the entire résumé. According to Bolg, “the summary of qualifications or objective is the candidate’s opportunity for a 30-second sell to the prospective employer.”

If you are interested in having your résumé reviewed, call CDS at (888) AACN JOB (222-6562) to schedule an appointment with a career counselor. CDS plans to provide on-site résumé review at NTI 2000 in Orlando. Fla.
