Northeast Arkansas Chapter Honors 25 Area Nurses

Recipients of the first Excellence in Critical Care awards, presented by the Northeast Arkansas Chapter of AACN, were honored at a special banquet.

An AACN chapter has reemerged in Arkansas, where a group of nurses began meeting in Fall 1998 after an earlier chapter had become inactive. The Northeast Arkansas Chapter of AACN has now submitted its official charter application and is working to increase its membership and plan community activities and educational offerings.

The chapter’s first formal activity was an educational program on ethical decision making. Feedback was positive from the approximately 50 participants.

Next, the chapter sponsored its first Excellence in Critical Care awards. The 25 recipients, including staff nurses, nurse practitioners, managers and educators, were recognized at a banquet and presented framed certificates. The top five award recipients received special gifts.

The awards were covered by a local television station and, through sponsorship, an advertisement congratulating the recipients was placed in a newspaper, which helped promote the positive image of critical care nurses in the region.

The honorees were Brenda Anderson, Laura Bettis, Kathy Blackman, Margaret Burroughs, Mary Jean Coleman, Susan Cox, Melinda Edwards, Diane Ellison, Deborah Fairchild, Marie Faulkner, Philip Faughn, Phyllis Furnish, Ranette Gambill, Paula Grimes, Diana Holt, Linda James, Tim Mitchell, Pat Ray, Naomi Renck, Lisa Shackleford, Angie Smith, Carol Smith, Robert Strahan, Ken Voyles and Pat Wood.

Chapter officers are Beth Murff, RN, MSN, CCRN, president; Diana Holt, RN, CCRN, president-elect; Heidi Lambert, RN, BSN, secretary; and Darlene Baker, RN, MSN, CCRN, CEN, treasurer.
