Step Outside the Box and Rediscover the WOW!
AACN chapter leaders were encouraged to innovate and rediscover passion and energy during a Chapter Leadership Development Workshop in May 2000 in Orlando, Fla.
Thinking outside the box is key to innovation and success in the future, 1999-2000 AACN President Anne W. Wojner, RN, MSN, CCRN, told the chapter leaders at the all-day workshop.
“I want to give you permission to change things,” Wojner said. “Get rid of the expression that we always do things this way, that we always have the newsletter looking this way, that we always run our chapter meetings this way. You have permission to blow it up and do things differently.
“Step outside the box. We do really need to think about creative ways to solve problems so we can carry on with the work. We’ve got to become incredibly flexible … to learn how to stretch and reach goals we have been unable to attain before,” Wojner said.
Seizing on the workshop theme of “A Journey of New Possibilities” Wojner said chapter leaders are the “pioneers on a wonderful journey of innovation.”
Incoming AACN President Denise Thornby, RN, MS, emphasized flexibility. Although chapters need a plan, the plan can change.
“You have to have a lot of tolerance for differences and for team work. Respect differences. Not all of us need to have the same skills,” she said. “And if something goes wrong, just laugh.”
AACN CEO Wanda Johanson, RN, MN, told the chapter leaders that relationships and loyalty are the lifeblood of an organization.
“You have to pay very close attention to the relationships. That’s what keeps people moving forward and enthusiastic,” she said.
In a presentation titled “Rediscovering WOW: Putting Passion and Power Back in Your Practice,” former AACN President Gladys Campbell, RN, MSN, encouraged the chapter leaders to be organizational bumblebees.
“Our role is to be the people who cross-pollinate, who share information and successes from one place to another,” she said.
To illustrate Campbell’s point, former AACN Board Member Debra Byram, RN, MSN, donned a bumblebee costume to “buzz” the room.
Campbell said that chapter leaders and nurses must have a “new mental model, that all of us are in this together.”
Getting the WOW back means choosing a positive attitude every day, she said.
“Every single day you have to decide whether you are going to be a thin-lipped old grouch, carrying your bag of bricks to work … or are you going to be someone who is happy and energetic.”
Campbell encouraged the leaders to help create meaningful memories for chapter members.
“Be present and fully engaged. Spend time with the members, look them in the eye, make them feel important,” she said.
Chapters Support Memorial Fund
Three chapters presented contributions to the Sharon J. Connor Memorial Fund during the Chapter Presidents’ Luncheon at the National Teaching Institute in May 2000 in Orlando, Fla. The fund was established to support resources to develop nurses as leaders.
Presenting the checks were Reynaldo R. Rivera, RN, MA, CCRN, CNAA, president of the New York City Chapter; Phyllis Cerone, RN, MS, CCRN, president of the Northwest Chicago Area Chapter; and Beth Willmitch, RN, BSN, CCRN, president of the Greater Miami Area Chapter.
A Celebration of Life
Exhibits, breast self-exam classes, clinical breast exams and mammogram referrals were all part of “A Celebration of Life,” the Breast Cancer Awareness Day event sponsored by the New York City Chapter of AACN in May 2000. Deborah Axelrod, MD, FACS, was the keynote speaker.
