Connect With Other Chapters at NTI 2001 in Anaheim: Share Strategies for Success

Chapters can connect with other chapters in a variety of ways, including at annual fall meetings, through their Chapter Advisory Team (CAT) representatives and through collaborative program efforts in some areas. One of the broadest opportunities to exchange ideas for success is at AACN’s National Teaching Institute™ and Critical Care Exposition, which is scheduled May 19 through 24, 2001, in Anaheim, Calif.

In addition to specific sessions that are geared to chapter interests, chapter members can meet other chapter members from across the country in more informal settings, including the Network Night event. This popular event is sponsored this year by Cross Country TravCorps and Baxter Healthcare Infusion Systems.

The AACN Resource Center at NTI is another place that chapter members can obtain information and materials and talk with CAT representatives, as well as representatives of the AACN Board of Directors and the AACN National Office.

Concurrent and enrichment sessions scheduled at the NTI will address a range of chapter-related topics:
“AACN Member Recruitment: Membership Has Its Privileges” is the title of one session, where Region 2 CAT member Roberta Kaplow, RN, PhD, CCNS, CCRN, Region 16 CAT
member LouAnn Honek, RN, and Region 17 CAT member Christine Gibson, RN, BSN, CCRN-R, will highlight the benefits AACN members enjoy and strategies to recruit new chapter
members and enhance member involvement at the chapter level.

“Bringing your Chapter’s Marketing Strategy from Watercolors to Wow!” will be presented by Susan Yeager, RN, MS, CCRN, and Lee Ann Ruess, RN, MS, CCRN, NP, past-president and
president, respectively, of the Central Ohio Chapter of AACN. They will share ways chapters can market their image and their benefits. Ways to develop logos, Web sites and other
enhancements will be discussed.

“Meet the Masters—Masters in the Meetings Profession Answering Your Every Question” will involve a panel of meeting experts, who will offer tips for planning successful chapter
educational programs or regional meetings. AACN Membership and Chapter Specialist Dennis J. Maggi will moderate the discussion.

“Shaping Your Future – Developing a Membership Campaign that Works!” will be presented by Maggi and Member, Chapter, Volunteers Director Tracey Kane. They will present tools that
chapters can use to develop and implement an effective member recruitment campaign.

“Restart Your Engine—It’s Time for a Chapter Tune-Up” is the topic of a presentation by CAT representatives Celeste Smith, RN, BSN, CCRN, Region 12, and LeAnn Ash, RN, BSN,
CCRN, Region 15. They will discuss issues and concerns that are common among chapters and provide practical strategies to help chapters become re-energized and succeed.

“Dollars and Sense of Chapter Finances” will explore chapter financial management. Presenting the session will be Region 1 CAT member Ruth Bryan, RN, MSN, CCRN, Region 3 CAT
member Clare Marie Tack, RN, MSN, CCRN, and Region 10 CAT member Sandra Cunningham, RN, MS, CCRN, CS, CCNS.

“Things That Make You Go Hmmm …” will be presented by Region 5 CAT representative Sydney Lange, RN, BSN, CCRN, Region 7 CAT representative Beth Willmitch, RN, BSN,
CCRN, and Region 14 CAT representative Jill Overman, RN, ADN. Ways chapter members can become more active leaders and how leadership training and involvement can enhance
chapter efforts will be discussed.

Other, special activities involving chapter representatives are the annual Chapter Presidents Luncheon, sponsored by Nellcor, now a part of Tyco Healthcare, and the daylong Chapter Leadership Development Workshop for chapter leaders nominated by their chapters.

Members Connect at Region 14 Meeting in Kansas City, Mo.

AACN members gathered at the Region 14 Fall Meeting in Kansas City, Mo.
The Greater Kansas City Area Chapter of AACN hosted the meeting.

The importance of chapters in linking to AACN’s initiatives was highlighted during the Region 14 Fall Meeting in Kansas City, Mo., where Chapter Advisory Team (CAT) representative Jill Overman, RN, and AACN national board member Lori Hendrickx, RN, EdD, CCRN, shared information about how chapters carry AACN’s message to their constituents.

Overman explained the role of the CAT in assisting members, noting that the Internet and publications members receive as a benefit of membership are increasing the avenues for members to stay connected.

Hendrickx emphasized that AACN’s mission and vision are primarily actualized through members at the local level. She highlighted a variety of initiatives that are aimed at enhancing and maintaining AACN’s strength, including involving more nursing students; career development assistance; membership retention and recruitment; leadership development; and public policy efforts. Hendrickx also encouraged members attending the meeting to be actively involved in their professional organization and consider volunteering to serve on national-level committees.
The Greater Kansas City Area Chapter of AACN, which hosted the meeting, also shared insight into its successes. Chapter President Caryl Goodyear-Bruch, RN, MSN, CCRN, was joined by other chapter members in offering ideas and suggestions that have worked for the chapter.

In addition to serving as a vehicle to receive information, the meeting provided the national representatives feedback from the local level. Members in attendance were able to convey their needs and suggestions, as well as to express their support for existing programs and resources in a number of areas.
