Central Minnesota Chapter Cardiac Class
Popular With Area Sixth-Grade Students
Sheila Campbell, a member of the Central
Minnesota Chapter of AACN, works with
sixth-graders in her area as part of a
chapter-sponsored cardiac class.
For the past four years, members of the Central
Minnesota Chapter of AACN have been teaching a cardiac class to sixth-graders in
their area. More than 100 students have participated each year.
The chapter members develop the curriculum,
which consists of four distinct modules:
Cardiac structure and function, using a heart
model
 Nutrition, using various food containers,
vials of fat from popular foods and plastic bags of sugar
 Conductivity, using a cardiac monitoring
device that allows all students to do an actual tracing of themselves
Vital signs, using dual stethoscopes so that
students can listen to their own heart sounds
The students rotate in groups of six to eight
among the modules and also work on word puzzles and worksheets.
During the class, the chapter members talk about
their roles in an effort to enhance the image of nursing. Because the curriculum
has been set, different nurses can participate in the program each year.
