�Bold Voices�Fearless and Essential,� the
theme of AACN President Connie Barden, RN,
MSN, CCNS, CCRN, this year, translate for
AACN Certification Corporation? How can the
�voice� of nursing be heard through
certification?
Here is just
one example of how the voice of
certification can strengthen the voice of
nursing:
As certified
nurses, you have chosen to validate your
knowledge by taking an examination. Many
thousands of you choose to keep your
credential active at each recertification
opportunity. Your voice is heard through
your commitment to excellence, which
benefits your patients and families.
As the
2002-03 chair of the AACN Certification
Corporation Board of Directors, I would like
to share other opportunities to use the
voice of certification, as well as some
perspectives on the year ahead. Throughout
the year, we will present a series of
articles in AACN News to examine ways
certification can help establish this voice.
For example,
AACN Certification Corporation is in the
process of developing a �certification white
paper.� This summary of the implications and
value of certification will be a voice to
our key stakeholders to message support for
certified nurses in patient care. In
addition, we are in the process of a
comprehensive study of practice. This
project will help us understand the practice
of critical care nursing across the
continuum of critical care and at various
levels of expertise. The data will help AACN
Certification Corporation develop future
exams to meet the needs of nurses in various
practice areas within critical care and give
voice to the practice of critical care
outside of the traditional ICU area.
There are
also many personal, less obvious ways that
each of us gives voice to our profession
every day. I am proud to share with you one
example:
My daughter,
Christy, who will enter college in the fall,
has chosen nursing as her major. Liz, the
daughter of our chair-elect, Suzanne Prevost,
has made the same commitment for the fall.
We are thrilled that they have heard the
voice of nursing through our practices and
our stories. And, we are proud to share our
stories with you�stories of influence, role
modeling and using the voice of nursing.
We hope that
the AACN Certification Board members will be
joined by our CCRN-AACN ambassadors, past
leaders and certificants in sharing their
voices.
