By Jo Ann Jenkins, RN, MSN, CCRN
Assistant Professor of Nursing
Central Missouri State University
The Kansas City Area Chapter of AACN recently
reached out to nursing students from both sides of the state line: Kansas and
Missouri. As a faculty member of one of the universities involved and a
long-term critical care nurse, I was pleased to see this type of fostering.
Nursing students were invited to attend a
six-hour professional development program. The opportunity was not only free but
also included excellent handouts. The chapter even hosted the students for a
meal.
The program, titled High Acuity PatientsHigh
Acuity Care Not Just in the ICU, was presented by Mary Meyer, RN, Donna
Pittaway, RN, and Peggy Lewis, RN. In addition to providing great instruction,
the program introduced the students to a wonderful professional organization.
At a time when nursing is facing critical
shortages, this nurturing of our future colleagues seems an excellent
investment. Many thanks to those responsible for this program.
