On
the Agenda
Following is
a report by AACN board member Suzanne M.
Burns, RN, MSN, RRT, ACNP, CCRN, FAAN, on
discussions and actions that took place
during the April 2003 board meeting.
Agenda
Item: President's Report
AACN
President Connie Barden, RN, MSN, CCNS, CCRN,
President-elect Dorrie Fontaine, RN, DNSc,
FAAN, and CEO Wanda Johanson, RN, MN, shared
recent activities, including collaboration
with the Nursing Organization Alliance, and
with the American College of Chest
Physicians, the American Thoracic Society
and the Society of Critical Care Medicine on
developing recommendations for addressing
the shortage of critical care professionals,
standardizing care and advancing critical
care informatics.
Agenda
Item: Strategic and Operating Plans
The board
reviewed and approved both the Strategic
Plan and the 2004 Operating Plan for AACN.
The
Strategic Plan, which incorporates data
about trends in the profession, healthcare
and society, provides the overall vision and
direction for the association to meet the
needs of members in a variety of ways over
the next three to five years. As a guide for
discussing and approving association
initiatives, AACN's Strategic Plan reflects
objectives to address priority issues
related to improving the environment of care
for nurses and patients, providing optimal
palliative and end-of-life care, and
ensuring appropriate staffing.
The Board
also reviewed progress of the association's
annual Operating Plan. Member requests for
resources in electronic formats have
increased, and initiatives around this are
proceeding with speed and efficiency. The
ECCO (Essentials of Critical Care
Orientation) Internet-based program has been
adopted by nearly 50 hospitals, and AACN's
new PDA resources have been expanded and
well received.
Agenda
Item: Healthy Work Relationships and
Environments
Healthy work
relationships and environments is the first
of three issues around which AACN is
developing strategies, including use of the
association voice, to promote the urgent
changes needed today. The other two are the
nursing shortage and staffing, and
palliative/end-of-life care. The Healthy
Work Environments initiative was launched at
NTI 2003 in San Antonio, Texas.
Agenda
Item: Election of Board Secretary and
Treasurer
The board
re-elected Mary Fran Tracy, RN, PhD, CCRN,
as secretary of the board and M. Dave
Hanson, RN, BSN, CCRN, EMT-P, as board
treasurer for one-year terms beginning July
1, 2003.
Agenda
Item: AACN Certification Corporation
Membership Meeting
The AACN
Board of Directors reviewed the activities,
strategic direction and financial report for
the AACN Certification Corporation. Margaret
Ecklund, RN, MS, CCRN, APRN-BC, chair of the
AACN Certification Corporation Board of
Directors, discussed major initiatives,
including raising awareness of the value of
certification and its links to patient
safety and nurse retention, and development
of new certification examinations, including
for progressive care and cardiovascular
subspecialties.
Agenda
Item: FY04 Budget
One of the
key responsibilities of the board is to
ensure the association has sufficient
resources and that resources are allocated
appropriately to achieve desired outcomes.
Before unanimously approving the budget for
fiscal year 2004, which is based on a
detailed Operating Plan, the board reviewed
it in relation to long-term strategic goals
and objectives.
Chief
Financial Officer Michael Willett emphasized
that the budget is developed to ensure not
only that initiatives are pursued in a
financially efficient and responsible
manner, but also that resources and services
maintain the quality expected from AACN.
Scene
and Heard
AACN
continues to seek visibility for our
profession and the organization. Following
is an update on recent outreach efforts.
Our Voice
in the Media
 The April
4, 2003, edition of NurseZone.com featured
an article on the new Nurse Manager
Leadership Collaborative that AACN launched
in collaboration with AONE and AORN to
nurture nurse managers. In the article,
titled "Leadership Collaborative Launched to
Aid Nurse Managers," AACN CEO Wanda Johanson,
RN, MN, explained that the organizations
wanted to develop a program to help nurse
managers develop and maintain the skills
needed to do their jobs effectively. The
collaborative will address coaching,
motivating and leading as the skill sets
needed by nurse managers. Johanson said that
the organizations envision a setup where
managers can participate in a variety of
ways, including attending workshops and
special sessions at conferences and
accessing relevant content on the Internet.
 In
announcing the election of new officers and
board members by the Society of Hospital
Medicine, PR Newswire quoted the society's
new president, Jeffrey R. Dichter, MD, as
saying, "The most important issue we can
focus on in 2003 is teamwork. I will strive
to foster relationships with organizations
like the American Association of
Critical-Care Nurses and create projects
that emphasize the importance of teamwork
between hospitalists and other healthcare
professionals." The announcement appeared on
April 7, 2003.
 The March
10, 2003, edition of Nursing Center eNews
announced that AACN had released a white
paper titled "Safeguarding the Patient and
the Profession: The Value of Critical Care
Nurse Certification." As part of the
announcement, Nursing Center applauded
nurses who have pursued certification and
the organizations that support them. In
addition, a link was provided to an article
titled "Realizing Your Marketing Influence,
Part 3: Professional Certification as a
Marketing Tool," the third in a series of
articles by AACN Marketing Director Dana
Woods for the Journal of Nursing
Administration.
 The April
14, 2003, issue of Advance for Nurses
included an article titled "A Success Story:
One hospital's journey with recruitment and
retention." The article noted that staffing
guidelines at Lake Norman Regional Medical
Center, Mooresville, N.C., follow AACN's
Staffing Blueprint: Constructing Your
Staffing Solutions.
 The April
2003 issue of RN magazine featured the "AACN
Update," including excerpts from the monthly
AACN News column by AACN President Connie
Barden, RN, MSN, CCNS, CCRN. In the column,
she discussed the need for "a call to action
for all of us to work together to improve
the healthcare system." The update also
included informative details about this
year's NTI.
Our Voice
at the Table
 AACN
Certification Corporation Chair Margaret M.
Ecklund, RN, MS, CCRN, APRN-BC, was a panel
speaker at the National Association of
Clinical Nurse Specialists 2003 conference.
The theme of the conference was "Many Faces,
One Mission: CNS Excellence in Clinical
Practice and Leadership." The panel
discussion, which was moderated by Brenda
Lyon, RN, DNS, FAAN, associate professor at
the Indiana University School of Nursing,
Indianapolis, focused on current issues
regarding certification of CNSs. Ecklund
presented information and answered questions
regarding AACN Certification Corporation's
CCNS certification program for CNSs in acute
and critical care. Representatives of the
American Nurses Credentialing Center and the
National Council of State Boards of Nursing
also participated.

the AACN Board of Directors and the AACN
Certification Corporation Board of
Directors, attended a national conference
and think tank conducted by Alaris Medical
Systems on the use of bar code technology.
More than 50 people representing medicine,
pharmacy, industry and nursing attended. As
a panelist for one session, Long discussed
the current status of bar code medication
administration, its impact on critical care
nursing and future implications.
 AACN
President-Elect Dorrie Fontaine, RN, DNSc,
FAAN, was a speaker at the recent Trends in
Trauma Nursing and Cardiovascular Nursing
Conference sponsored by the Southeastern
Pennsylvania Chapter. Her presentation was
titled "Family Presence at the End of Life:
Changing Minds and Hearts." Approximately
900 nurses attended the conference. Fontaine
and SePA Chapter President Barbara Pope, RN,
MSN, CCRN, also conducted a breakout session
with 100 of the participants. Fontaine
highlighted AACN's initiatives and discussed
ECCO, the Internet-based Essentials of
Critical Care Orientation, certification and
strategic planning. She and Pope answered
participant questions regarding
evidence-based practice, collaborative
relationships and safe workplace
environments. AACN board member Kathleen
McCauley, RN, PhD, CS, FAAN, a past SePA
president, also participated.
 Long
presented a concurrent session at the
Critical Care Trends conference sponsored by
the Greater St. Louis Chapter of AACN. Her
presentation, titled "Lavender, Lassie, and
Brahms: A New Look at Old Therapies,"
focused on aromatherapy, animal-assisted
therapy and music therapy. She also
presented the closing session speech titled
"Bold Voices: In Search of a Rainbow."
