Hear Ideas to Energize Your Chapter at NTI Sessions
By Julie Kruithof, RN, MSN, CCRN
President, West Michigan Chapter
Maggie Carriker, RN, MSN
President-elect, West Michigan Chapter
and Gayle Stinnett, RN, MSN, CCRN, CNS
Tennessee Valley Chapter
Are you looking for ways to energize your chapter programs? You
could find answers at AACN's 2003 National Teaching Institute and Critical Care
Exposition in San Antonio, Texas. Gayle Stinnet of the Tennessee Valley Chapter
in northern Alabama has.
In fact, at NTI 2002 in Atlanta, Ga., Stinnett was inspired by
ideas presented by representatives of the West Michigan Chapter in a chapter
educational session titled "Programming With Pizzazz Puttin' on the Ritz."
The presentation was one of several educational sessions offered
at the NTI to assist chapter leaders to further develop their chapters. If you
wonder whether attending chapter sessions is valuable, just consider the
experience of the Tennessee Valley Chapter in taking ideas presented by another
chapter that is located thousands of miles away and turning them into reality
back home.
Realizing that educational programming was an area of expertise
for the West Michigan Chapter, the chapter leaders proposed this content to
focus on the guidelines and key points to ensure successful chapter programming.
Throughout the program, they shared several unique and creative programming
ideas, including "Who Wants to be a Critical-Care Millionaire" and "Death of a
Cell." More than 200 NTI participants attended the program.
Stinnett returned with a proposal for her chapter's board of
directors to develop a program around a Mystery Dinner Theater model. The idea
was supported enthusiastically, and the board had great fun in planning this
program.
In December 2002, the Tennessee Valley Chapter presented "Mystery
Dinner Theater-Death of a Cell." Five of the chapter members played roles
representing each type of shock, using props to support their characters. Using
the West Michigan Chapter program as a model, a moderator and Detective Schnoop
interviewed each character to determine the killer of the cell.
The Tennessee Valley Chapter appreciated the fact that the West
Michigan Chapter shared successful programming ideas. Chapters always have great
ideas to share, and the chapter educational sessions are a great vehicle to
learn from other's successes in strengthening and developing activities. This is
just one way that the Bold Voice of AACN can be heard throughout the critical
care communities.
Take the opportunity to experience chapter educational sessions
at NTI 2003. You won't regret it.
Chapter session topics for NTI 2003 are "From Ripples to Waves:
Establishing and Revitalizing an AACN Chapter," "Leadership Lessons: Board
Learning Partners," "The Art of Creating an Exemplar: Becoming a Part of AACN's
Circle of Excellence," "Making Your Chapter's Voice Bold, Fearless and
Essential!," "Preventing Generational Collisions," "Integration and Inclusion of
Progressive Care into Mainstream AACN" and "Survivor: San Antonio-A Chapter
Experience.
NTI 2003 is scheduled for May 17 through 22 in San Antonio,
Texas. For more information or to register, visit the NTI Web site.

Serving Up Care
With the support of a grant from the Eli Lilly Company,
members of the Northern Illinois Chapter of AACN recently served lunch to more
than 100 homeless people at the Shelter Care Ministries in Rockford, Ill. While
there, the group also took blood pressures and provided education about the
availability of healthcare services at area clinics. In addition, the critical
care nurses were called upon to attend to a seizure victim and an asthma attack
victim until paramedics arrived. Pictured (from left) are Jan Sladek, Tamry
Wennenmaker, Mary Stephenson, Dana Martin, Marla Farone, Myra Porthouse,
