Special NTI Sessions Geared to
Chapter Interests
Topics Focus on Ways to Enhance Involvement and Programming
NTI participants with an interest in chapter
involvement will find several sessions helpful at NTI 2004, May 15 through 22 in
Orlando, Fla. Following is brief information about the sessions that are
planned:
Advancing the Critical Care
Nurse: Continuing Education in the 21st Century
Providing educational opportunities in today�s
fast-paced and changing healthcare environment is a priority for many AACN
chapters. This session will focus on best practices and key processes for
planning successful educational programs and seminars. Additional areas this
session will explore are the AACN awards and scholarship program, which promotes
chapter involvement and degree completion, as well as strategies for promoting
critical care nursing as a career choice for new graduates. Jodi Gunther, RN,
MS, CCRN, and Leslie A. Collins, RN, MS, CCRN, CCNS, of the Northwest Chicago
Area Chapter will present this session.
A Field of Dreams: If You Plan
It, They Will Come
To build your chapter�s �field of dreams� requires
the planning committee to �go the distance� to assess, thoughtfully plan,
deliver and evaluate quality educational programs. This session will focus on
the details of program planning and implementation, marketing and promotion,
coordinating facilities and conference services support, financial management,
registration, evaluation and accreditation. Speakers: Joann M. Panno, RN, MSN,
and Michele L. Manning, RN, MSN, CCRN, CCNS, of the Greater Akron Area Chapter
are the presenters.
The Chapter Board: A Sum Greater
Than Its Parts
The chapter board has an essential role in providing
its membership with tools and resources to assist in professional and clinical
team and leadership development. Because the board is a conduit for these
professional development activities, it must be a cohesive group, focused on
meeting the needs of the membership. This session will discuss the importance of
team building and strategies useful in creating a cohesive board. The presenters
are Damon Cottrell, RN, MS, APRN-BC, CCNS, CCRN, CEN, and Mary Beth Reid, RN,
MS, APRN-BC, CCRN, of the Dallas County Chapter.
Chapter Strategic Planning 101
Envision the chapter of your dreams. A solid
strategic plan can help focus efforts toward turning that dream into a reality,
while providing a framework for chapter operations. The purpose of this session
is to introduce concepts related to strategic and operational planning, and to
provide tools and resources that will assist with creation of a practical
chapter strategic plan. Janice M. Wojcik, RN, MS, CCRN, APRN-BC, Region 3
Chapter Advisory Team representative, is the speaker.
Multi-Chapter Collaboration:
Formula for Success
Rapid advances in technology, pharmacology and
clinical interventions require education for nurses on a frequent basis.
Providing this support is often a challenge for a variety of reasons, including
a decrease in staff, a decrease in educators and a lack of excess educational
funds. Multichapter collaboration can be an effective and cost-containing
solution. This session will focus on collaborative efforts, evaluative
techniques and best practices in relation to multichapter collaboration. The
presenter is Mary Zellinger, RN, MN, ANP, CCRN, of the Atlanta Area Chapter.
Chapters Help Boost Membership
Drive Totals During January
The Greater Miami Area Chapter continued to build on
its lead in AACN�s Critical Links membership campaign, adding eight new members
during January to bring its total to 48. However, several chapters have
recruited 30 or more chapters since the campaign began May 1. They are the
Triangle Chapter at 36, the Greater Washington Area Chapter at 35, the Volusia
Flagler Chapter and the Northwest Georgia Chapter, both at at 34, and the
Atlanta Area Chapter at 30.
As of the end of January, a total of 3,384 new
members had been recruited by chapters and individuals. Chapters contributed 50
of the 265 new members recruited during January. The campaign ends March 31.
The chapters recruiting the most new members and
reporting the largest percentage increase when the campaign ends March 31 will
each receive a $250 gift certificate toward the purchase of AACN resources. In
addition, participating chapters are entered into a prize drawing each month for
one complimentary NTI registration. The winner for January was the North Central
Florida Chapter.

AACN welcomes two new active chapters�one in
Colorado and the other in Virginia.
The Northern Colorado Chapter serves the Longmont
