Vol. 23, No. 9, SEPTEMBER 2006
Calling All CATs
Oct. 31 Is Deadline to Apply for Regional Positions
The Chapter Advisory Team (CAT) plays a vital role in supporting and linking local AACN chapters and the National Leadership Team. AACN is currently inviting and encouraging past and current chapter officers to apply for the advisory team positions in eight of its 19 regions. The chapter advisers will serve two-year terms, July 1, 2007, through June 30, 2009. The deadline to apply is Oct. 31, 2006.
The CAT is vital in ensuring effective communication between the AACN Board of Directors and National Office staff and local chapters on pressing issues chapters face. Advisers are volunteers who have expert knowledge on chapter issues and trends in their regions and who are well informed about what is happening at the national level and how that affects chapters. They directly support chapters and chapter leaders in a number of important ways.
The chapter adviser responsibilities are to:
• Serve as a liaison and spokesperson to AACN chapters and leaders in his or her region.
• Establish ongoing mechanisms for communication with chapter leaders.
• Work in partnership with AACN staff to identify individual chapter strengths and needs so that chapters can be effectively supported and serviced.
• Develop and mentor local chapter leaders for future chapter and national leadership roles.
• Travel within assigned region.
• Attend two face-to-face meetings with other advisory team members each year.
• Participate in conference calls and use electronic media and online communication tools and databases.
If you are interested in serving as a chapter adviser in your region but have questions regarding the role, contact Chapter Specialist Val Hardwick at (800) 394-5995, ext. 313; Val.Hardwick@aacn.org. You can also contact the current chapter adviser in your region. Contact information for chapter advisers is available online at www.aacn.org > chapters > chapter resource center.
To apply, register online at www.aacn.org > volunteer opportunities. Be sure to select “Chapter Advisory Team” under the “specialty or type of role.”

Chapter Administration Database Enters Phase II
Phase l of the “live” Chapter Administration Database was launched in November 2005 as a tool for chapters to maintain their membership lists, keep track of members whose AACN membership has expired and capture inquiries regarding new membership. Chapters are required to maintain and update their membership list.
Phase II, which is scheduled for Fall 2006, will include a number of enhancements based on feedback you provided. Meanwhile, the following “quick tips” will help you use the existing database:
Log-in Problems: May be caused by one of the following: (1) your chapter has not submitted a current officer listing, (2) the person trying to login is not a current board member (president, president-elect, secretary, treasurer), (3) the password being used is not the same as the one set up for the person's AACN Profile.
Membership Chair Log-in: Chapters that have a Membership chairperson maintaining their membership list can access the database by using a current board member’s membership number and last name, providing that the board member agrees. The issue will be addressed in Phase ll.
AACN Membership Number Verification: To add a member to the database, you will need the person’s AACN membership number. If you don’t have that information, please e-mail the list of names to Mitzi.Inman@aacn.org or call (800) 394-5995, ext. 365; you will receive a response within one week.
Multiple-Year Memberships: Chapters that offer two- and three-year memberships will not be able to track them in the current database. Chapters need to keep a separate record of those memberships. This issue will be addressed in Phase ll.
Expiring Chapter Memberships: The database has a feature that tracks expiring memberships on a 30-, 60- and 90-day scale. If the chapter member does not renew prior to the membership end date, the system will automatically remove the member from the membership list. The member will be moved to a “Past” screen that only AACN’s National Office can access. To have a member reactivated, please e-mail Mitzi.Inman@aacn.org or call (800) 394-5995, ext. 365.

Attention Chapter Officers: We Need Your Help
Please take a few minutes to review/update your customer profile so that you, as a chapter officer, will receive our e-mail communications. By updating your customer profile every time your contact information changes, you ensure that you are kept informed of the information necessary to keep your chapter membership updated.
The majority of the chapter updates and communications are sent via e-mail, which is why it is so important that we have correct e-mail address information.
You can access your customer profile by visiting the AACN Web site.
Change Chapter E-mail Information for FY07
Is your chapter e-mail correspondence still going to last year’s chapter president? If your chapter has an AACN chapter e-mail address and has recently submitted a new officer listing, the link needs to be changed. You can change this and ensure that your chapter receives up-to-date information from national AACN, prospective chapter members and customers by submitting the online Chapter E-mail Change Request Form. It’s as simple as 1-2-3! To access this form, visit www.aacn.org > chapters > chapter resource center.
