Sen. Atkinson Lauds Critical Care Nurses at Chapter Certification Dinner

By Julie Saindon, RN, BSN, CCRN,
President, Pacific Crest Regional Chapter

The Pacific Crest Regional Chapter (PCRC) held its annual Certification Celebration Dinner and celebrated the chapter’s 20th anniversary in February. The PCRC, a “Chapter without Walls,” is based in Medford, Ore., serving southern Oregon and Northern California. The event was attended by certified nurses and chapter members in the Pacific Crest region, as well as Region 18 CAT, Melissa Hutchinson. Administration from two area hospitals, Rogue Valley Medical Center and Providence Medford Medical Center, came to support our certified nurses, as did special guest, vascular surgeon John Schwartz, MD, and our guest speaker, Oregon state Sen. Jason Atkinson. The event’s theme was “We Love Our CCRNs and PCCNs” and included an interactive presentation on healthy work environments by chapter treasurer Lori Lind, RN, MHA, PMNed, CCRN.

The highlight of the evening was a presentation by Atkinson, who suffered an accidental gunshot wound to the leg in July 2008, and spent considerable time in the ICU. The senator gave a heartwarming tribute to critical care nurses. He shared the story of his injury and nearly becoming an amputee, and stated how ironic it is that while he works in Iraq, he was shot in Central Point, Ore.

This injury was not the senator’s first experience with critical care nurses. He spent more than four months visiting the NICU six years ago when his son was born at 24 weeks gestation and also many hours in the ICU last year when his wife was diagnosed with cancer. Atkinson believes critical care nurses can’t help but give exceptional care: “You’re hardwired to serve people.” The senator’s kind words and indebtedness to the medical profession, particularly critical care nurses, left nary a dry eye in the room.

Atkinson’s wife, Stephanie, was awarded an “Honorary Critical Care Nurse-CCRN” for her “astute assessment skills, quick reactions, ability to remain calm in a very stressful situation, and her patience and compassionate caregiving.” After the senator’s accident, she called 911, rendered aid to him and spent many hours in the ICU, learning skills she hopes to never use again.

Atkinson is back at work in Salem and continues to have physical therapy. Although he walks with a cane, the normal function of his knee is returning. It was a privilege for our critical care nurses to see him walk to the podium. The Pacific Crest Regional Chapter was honored to have such tremendous support for our chapter and our certified nurses.

Celebration Dinner. From left are Heather Timmons,

NTI Chapter Events

This year’s NTI will be filled with much to learn and see, with several events designed for chapter members and leaders, including the Leadership Development Workshop, Chapter Concurrent Educational Sessions, Chapter Best Practice Posters, Chapter Regional Meetings and Chapter Q&A Sessions. The Greater New Orleans Chapter is your host and will be available at the Host Chapter Booth to answer questions about New Orleans, and will have the official NTI T-shirts for sale (the T-shirts will also be available for purchase in the Bookstore).

Chapter Leadership Development Workshop

The big event for chapter leaders is the Annual Chapter Leadership Development Workshop (LDW), which will take place Sunday, May 17 at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel. Funded in part by a grant from Covidien, the all-day LDW will provide chapter leaders with the core leadership skills to effectively and successfully manage their chapters while carrying out the mission of AACN. Program topics will focus on chapter governance, including chapter strategic, financial and educational planning.

Each chapter that sends at least one chapter leader to LDW will receive a $350 grant from AACN to help offset the costs of attending the workshop (e.g., airfare, hotel, etc). The first chapter leader registration received from each chapter is complimentary. Additional leaders may attend LDW at the rate of $85 each. Category O or C (Synergy CERP) CNEs are provided for this workshop.
Registration for the Chapter LDW is separate from your NTI registration. Go to www.aacn.org > NTI > Chapters/Chapter Advisors for the Chapter LDW registration form. The registration deadline is April 30th 2009, and seating is limited.

Online Chapter Education Room Opens

The new Chapter Education Room (CER) opened in January to reduce the workload of chapters and increase access to quality education through this Web-based program. The CER, available only to AACN chapters, contains vetted and approved programs that eliminate the need for chapters to go through the approval process for programs already in the Chapter Education Room. The program approval process will remain available for individual programs for which a chapter wants to obtain CNE/CERP approval.

Available in the Chapter Education Room are

• CNE-Approved Programs – A selection of prerecorded multimedia presentations gleaned from the highest rated NTI sessions (available via a self-paced link that allows the user to view a variety of topics at their convenience; each presentation is approved for continuing nursing education credits).
• Happenings – A list of upcoming live webinars that chapters can attend as a group.
• Speaker Directory – Comprehensive background and contact information on many outstanding presenters in the nursing community.

The Chapter Education Room opened with approximately 10 pre-approved programs. Programs will continue to be added so that chapters have a vast selection from which to choose for their events.

Two live webinars, recorded in February, are now available for chapter meetings. The sessions are “Keeping the Balance: Achieving Desired Outcomes with CRRT,” by Leslie Swadener-Culpepper, RN, MSN, CCRN, CCNS,

critical care clinical nurse specialist, The Medical Center of Central Georgia, and “Beyond the Land of Ice and Snow: Moderate Hypothermia,” by Dr. DaiWai Olson, assistant professor, Duke University Medical Center.
Additional live webinars are planned. We encourage chapters to regularly check the Happenings area of the Chapter Education Room and register to participate.

Access to the Chapter Education Room is available via the left-hand vertical menu on the Chapters home page: www.aacn.org > Community > Chapters.

Note: Chapter members must be listed in their online chapter database to gain access to the Chapter Education Room.

We welcome your feedback about this new feature and at chaptereducationroom@aacn.org.
