Coon Rapids MN
Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence
Fall 06-07 Recipient

Mercy Hospital and its Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are proud to be a second-year recipient of the Beacon Award. We maintain our excellence by balancing the needs of our patients and families, staff, physicians and leadership. The staff of ICU supports patients and families and assures safe passage in a caring and healing environment.

The nurses of Mercy's ICU deliver high-quality care, with forty-five percent of our staff holding certification in critical care. This certification level shows our staff's individual accountability in the attaining the knowledge and expertise needed to care for the critically ill in an ever-changing environment.

Evidence-based clinical initiatives are the mainstay of the clinical excellence of this unit. We embrace new technology and research, and apply it to our practice using rapid-cycle change methodology. Some examples of our current clinical initiatives are: ventilator-associated pneumonia prevention; catheter-related blood stream infection prevention; glycemic control maintenance; decreased mortality from sepsis; and primary stroke certification.

The Mercy ICU is a place where every person is valued as an individual. Family, patient and staff satisfaction drive the important outcomes of this unit. We strive daily to deliver the best possible care.
