Content Overview

A collaborative effort between the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), Elsevier | MC Strategies, and AACN, AACN: Critical Care Pharmacology features eight lessons based on current standards around safe drug administration as set forth by professional, regulatory, and certifying bodies. Each lesson has a case study with patient updates throughout to demonstrate the topics being presented. The ninth “lesson” is actually a Critical Care Pharmacology assessment exam. Completion of AACN: Critical Care Pharmacology earns users 13.5 CNE credit hours — all of which fulfill APRN pharmacology CNE requirements.

Course Learning Objectives

After completing this course, users will be able to:

  1. Identify patient safety issues related to medication administration in critical care.
  2. Differentiate pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics and the effect on individuals or specific patient populations.
  3. Describe the expected effect of vasoactive medications in achieving desired patient outcomes.
  4. Correlate antidysrhythmic use and the expected effect on the cardiac cycle.
  5. Identify appropriate assessment tools for evaluating need for and effectiveness of medications administered for pain and sedation.
  6. Specify nursing assessments and interventions when administering paralytic medications.
  7. Implement appropriate processes to safely administer blood and blood products.
