The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses scholarship program will expand to help members enrich their careers and acquire knowledge and skills beyond traditional academic nursing education. A limited number of scholarships for specific academic courses will continue to be awarded.
Scholarship applicants must assess gaps in their knowledge and skills, identify and evaluate learning opportunities, and develop a plan to show how an AACN scholarship will help them achieve their professional learning goals. In developing your learning plan, be as specific as possible when you are linking learning activities to knowledge gaps. AACN membership is required for the duration of the learning activity.
AACN scholarships broaden career enrichment by embracing skills beyond traditional academic nursing education. Eligible programs demonstrate a relationship to nursing practice and include those that focus on communication, collaboration, mediation, leadership and governance, organizational effectiveness, informatics, political processes, safety and quality.
Nursing or nonnursing academic courses may be eligible if they show applicability to an individual's development plan. Scholarships won't be awarded for activities related to clinical learning, such as attending the National Teaching Institute and Critical Care Exposition or preparing for clinical certification. If you are pursuing an academic degree, you may apply for funding of specific courses rather than for support of an entire degree program over more than one year's time.

To give AACN members a voice in healthcare reform, the AACN scholarship program will expand to support attendance at the 2010 Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI) program, Sunday, March 14 through Tuesday, March 16, in Washington, DC.
The highly regarded NIWI program – sponsored by the Nursing Organizations Alliance, a coalition to create a strong voice for nurses – teaches nurses how to influence health policy at the local and national levels. Nurses visit Capitol Hill and acquire the skills needed to work with legislators to advance policies and agendas. Visit www.nursing-alliance.org for information about NIWI.
AACN will award up to 15 scholarships to attend the 2010 NIWI program contingent on acceptance to NIWI, which requires a separate application. Scholarship applications for NIWI must be received at AACN by November 1, 2009.
AACN supports the scholarship efforts of the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA). Although scholarship applications for this year's program closed on January 16, student nurses can visit the NSNA Web site at www.nsna.org or call 718-210-0705 for information about next year's program.
