NTI and the Advanced Practice Institute (API) feature the latest innovations in practice, technology and healthcare delivery, evidence-based practices and research. NTI/API offers clinical and professional practice topics in the educational classroom area.

Clinical topics include: Cardiovascular, Emergency/Trauma, Endocrine, Epidemiology, Gastrointestinal, Hematology/Oncology, Hemodynamics, Immunology, Medication Management (NTI only), Multisystem, Neurological, Obstetrics, Pain Management, Pharmacology (API only), Pulmonary, Renal, Sepsis, Skin/Wound Care and Transplantation.

Professional Practice topics include: Certification, Cultural Diversity, Education, End-of-Life/Palliative Care, Ethics, Evidence-based Practice, Family-Centered Care, Finance, Healthy Work Environment, Leadership Development, Legal, Patient Safety, Pediatric and Neonatal, Progressive Care, Psychological and Psychosocial, Public Policy, Publishing, Research, Technology and Tele-ICU.

Learning Facilitators

Facilitators engage NTI participants to collaboratively contribute to an interactive and dynamic presentations. NTI facilitators promote professional development by using learning facilitation methods that enhance critical thinking and encourage a shared accountability for learning.

Teaching/Learning Methods

NTI/API facilitators use adult learning facilitation methods such as lecture with question-and-answer dialogue, case study discussions, roundtables, debates, panel presentations, open discussion forums, poster presentations, interactive hands-on learning laboratories, audience response systems and computer-assisted self-study pavilions.

Curriculum and Session Summaries

Whether you are an advanced beginner, intermediate or expert in the field of high acuity and critical care nursing, the NTI/API curriculum offers in-depth content using the latest evidence-based guidelines and practice standards to assist nurses caring for patients with complex health problems. NTI/API curriculum also offers education to enhance professional development.

Level of Educational Content

As a guide for participants, NTI/API educational sessions are assigned one of the learner levels listed below and indicated on the session summaries. Participants may attend any session regardless of the level. For all levels, content is beyond basic knowledge, generalizable regardless of the participants' employer and enhances professional development or performance of nurses.

Advanced Beginner: Has been in the field of nursing approximately one to three years and/or is new to role or topic. Able to recognize meaningful educational components in each session.

Proficient: Has worked in the field of nursing for extended period and is proficient in nursing skills, practice and/or research pertaining to high acuity and critically ill patients.

Expert: Has special knowledge or ability and performs skills, practice independently and effortlessly. Relies on background experience of clinical situations to determine appropriate actions.

All Levels: Applicable for learners at any level.

Session Formats

NTI learning opportunities offer the following formats:

Preconferences: Offered Saturday and Sunday before the API/NTI main conference begins. Three or six hour sessions provide in-depth coverage of a topic reflecting focused state-of-the-art content (e. g., advanced 12 lead ECG interpretation, evidence-based practice changes, healthy work environments, hands-on simulation labs and review courses). Content may not be product-specific. Facilitators allow one-third to one-half time for interactive exchange.

SuperSessions: Large sessions for all participants that feature national speakers. These challenging and motivating presentations are geared toward professional success, future trends and/or national and global issues. SuperSessions are held Monday and Tuesday morning and late afternoon on Wednesday.

Concurrent Sessions: More than 250 concurrent sessions offered on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Sessions may be 60 or 75 minutes. Content may not be product-specific.

Fast and Focused Sessions: Six or seven daily fast and focused sessions offered on Tuesday and Wednesday. Fast and focused sessions are 150 minutes, have a singular topic focus and provide participants with a choice to earn contact hours for all or part of the session. Three separate class codes will be designated for each fast and focused session. Each fast and focused session starts with one 30-minute presentation designed to give the participants quick, concise information about a specific topic. Two separate 60-minute presentations drawing from various published research and evidence-based resources on the same topic will follow the first 30 minutes. Content may not be product-specific.

Pharmacology Content: Meets the growing need for continuing professional development in pharmacotherapeutics. Pharmacy content includes topics such as drug specific information, safe-prescribing practices, safe medication administration and prescribing methodologies. Pharmacology contact hours are a component of the total CNE hours. They are not added to the total CNE hours. Sessions are designated as category ‘RX’ for the convenience of APRNs who require this content for licensure and/or certification renewal.

Sunrise Sessions: Early-morning breakfast sessions offered in addition to Tuesday and Wednesday morning concurrent sessions. Sessions are 90 minutes, include breakfast and are funded by unrestricted educational grants from corporate supporters. Content is approximately 75 percent clinical information and 25 percent product-specific information. Participants earn CERP credit.

ExpoEd Education: ExpoEd sessions in the Critical Care Exposition are 30-minute educational and in-service-style learning opportunities on topics relevant to high acuity and critical care. ExpoEd sessions are product-specific and participants earn CERP credits. These sessions are listed in the ExpoEd guide and presented in exhibitor booths or special education stages in the Exhibit Hall.

Poster Presentations: More than 130 posters displayed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the Lobby. Posters demonstrate a wide variety of completed research and evidence-based practice innovations. Four 30-minute presentations by Research Poster Award Winners will be held on Tuesday. NTI Voices: Every print issue of NTI’s daily newspaper includes a clinical article awarding 1.0 CNE. Look for copies at the convention center and major NTI hotels. NTI Voices without the CNE article is available online.

Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Contact Hours

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) is an accredited provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. AACN has been approved as a Provider of continuing education in nursing by the State Boards of Registered Nursing of California (#01036) and Louisiana (#ABN12).

AACN educational sessions meets the standards for most states requiring mandatory CNE contact hours for RN license renewal. CNE contact hours are calculated on a 60 minute contact hour and is determined by the number of sessions that a registered NTI participant attend. Participants can earn up to 35 CNE for NTI 2014.

Continuing Education Recognition Points (CERPs)

CERPs are recognized by the AACN Certification Corporation, AACN’s credentialing arm, to encompass a wide spectrum of continuing education activities performed by nurses in high acuity and critical care.

AACN recommends consulting with your state board or credentialing organization before submitting CERPs to fulfill continuing education requirements for license or certification renewal.

Sunrise, ExpoEd and Poster sessions award CERPs. One CERP equals 60 minutes of continuing education.

CNE/CERP/Pharma Certificates

Track your evaluation of every NTI/API, Sunrise, ExpoEd, Poster sessions you attend on the session evaluation worksheets at the back of the NTI schedule booklet provided on-site to each participant. Follow the online prompts to enter your session and program evaluations and print your CNE certificate. 

Copies of CNE/CERP/Pharma Certificates issued are maintained at AACN in a secure, password-protected file for a six-year period. AACN reserves the right to perform random audits of participant’s CNE/CERP/Pharma Certificates to confirm NTI registration and validity of the certificate.
