At last year's NTI, AACN President Beth Hammer announced her theme, Act With Intention. Since then, she has advanced the theme by writing about what it means in her Bold Voices column and speaking at forums across the United States. Act With Intention serves as a constant reminder to us as nurses that when we step back and take in the bigger picture, our intentions become clear. In her unique and energetic style, she will share insights and best practices she has learned during her presidential year. Hammer is a nurse practitioner in cardiology at the Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI.

In one of the most highly anticipated moments of the week, AACN President-Elect Kristine Peterson will declare the new theme and unveil the art that illustrates its meaning. Peterson has 30 years' experience in critical care as a staff nurse, manager, educator and clinical specialist. She is a clinical nurse specialist at the Heart and Vascular Institute at Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wausau, WI.

How I Learned My ABC's: Asking, Back-to-Basics, Collaboration, Discovery

Sole, a nursing professor at the University of Central Florida, Orlando, enjoys a research career that spans more than 20 years, one that focuses on the physiological phenomena and clinical practices related to airway management, breathing and circulation. Her current study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, tests endotracheal tube cuff pressure to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia and micro-aspiration, the entry of secretions or foreign material into the trachea and lungs. Sole's research directly influences nursing and respiratory care.
