Issues Statement

Nurses have a lot of credibility and trust from the public. As a large voting block we can be the voice for the patients, families and communities we serve.

To lead from the bedside, nurses need to accept the power we are given by society to impact patients’ experiences and outcomes and be open to continuous learning and accepting feedback regarding our practice. It is more effective when we act together to express our collective experiences and set attainable goals for the future than act alone.

The IOM recommendation for the Future of Nursing has eight key propositions for leading change and advancing health. One of the key focuses is to prepare and enable nurses to lead from where they stand.

In my experience, knowledge, accountability and leadership are factors in motivating the direct nurse to strive for excellence and contribute to a healthy work environment. 

AACN has a vision that is dedicated to creating a healthcare system driven by the needs of patients and families. As nurses lead many of the health quality indicators for patient safety and outcomes, it is important to have the support of our professional organizations and work facilities to help create, test and implement change at the bedside.

Providing tools to nurses at the bedside is a key component of creating healthy work environments, implementing new models of care and transforming health. For example, AACN Clinical Scene Investigator (CSI) Academy is a great model for driving nursing excellence and providing leadership training to staff nurses.

AACN can continue to develop this program to provide team training and empower staff nurses with the knowledge and support necessary to become leaders who guide their peers in creating unit-based change. In addition, AACN can help develop infrastructures and policies that can advocate for a full scope of practice and promote clinical excellence.
