AACN is comprised of over 80,000 acute and critical-care nurses committed to providing the highest quality care to their patients and the patients' families. Volunteerism is a vital component of AACN's success. Last year alone, over 4100 volunteers served the organization and through their contributions moved the organization closer to its vision and strategic goals.

Did you know that volunteers contributed to the following outcomes this past year?

Staff nurses consulted with AACN on two staff nurse advisory groups to inform us about the challenges they face in the workplace and begin discussing potential solutions. These groups laid the ground work for the Regional Staff Nurse Summits which are being planned for the coming year.

The free online and journal-based CE offerings for all members were expanded. This would not have been possible without the numerous volunteers who review CE articles and write the CE tests.

AACN continues its work to develop and publish Practice Alerts to help nurses and other health care practitioners carry their bold voices to the bedside to directly impact patient care. The Evidence-based Practice Resource Work Group identifies, authors and develops resources for the implementation of the practice alerts.

Over 180 units have received the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence. A dedicated group of volunteers is responsible for reviewing, scoring and developing the comprehensive feedback that is provided to each Beacon applicant. This group continues to grow as the number of applications increases and with both the progressive care and pediatric applications now available.

NTI and the Advanced Practice Institute rely on the dedicated volunteers who serve on these two work groups to review the nearly 1500 session abstracts that are submitted and from those develop the well balanced, comprehensive educational program that you experience each year at NTI.

Over 3000 volunteers served as Ambassadors throughout the country. These individuals promoted AACN and its key initiatives including Beacon, certification, healthy work environments, evidence-based practice and were contributors to our record-breaking membership growth through their recruitment efforts.

This year, the AACN Certification Corporation in partnership with the American Organization of Nurse Executives launched the Nurse Manager and Leader Certification. Several volunteers contributed to the development of this exam as well as others worked to update our other certification exams.
