Clareen Wiencek, RN, PhD, ACNP, ACHPN, serves a three-year term as a director on the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) board from July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2014.

Wiencek — nurse manager/clinician in the Thomas Palliative Care Unit at Massey Cancer Center, Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, Richmond — brings to the board more than 35 years of experience as a staff nurse, nurse manager and researcher.

Before joining VCU in 2011, she held various research, staff nurse and management positions at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Cleveland, for 10 years. Prior experience includes clinical and academic positions in California, Indiana and Ohio.

A reviewer for the Journal of Critical Care and an End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium National faculty member, Wiencek served on AACN’s Chapter Advisory Team from 2006-2010 and the Evidence-Based Work Group in 2010-2011.

She belongs to the Midwest Nursing Research Society, Society of Critical Care Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

Recipient of AACN’s 2010 Circle of Excellence award, Wiencek earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Cincinnati in 1976, and medical-surgical nursing and acute care nurse practitioner master’s degrees in 1979 and 2001, respectively, from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, where she received a doctorate degree in nursing in 2008.

She holds Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse certifications, as well as the Alumnus CCRN designation.
