Mary Bylone, RN, MSM, CNML, serves a three-year term on the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) board of directors from July 1, 2011, to June 30, 2014.

Vice president for patient care services and chief nursing officer at The William W. Backus Hospital, Norwich, Conn., Bylone previously worked as assistant chief of clinical operations, Kessler Memorial Hospital, Hammonton, N.J., from 2003 to 2005, and nurse manager, medical respiratory ICU, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, from 2001 to 2003.

Founder and president of Leaders Within, LLC, a consultancy, she was administrative and clinical nursing director, South Jersey Health System, Bridgeton, N.J., from 1997 to 2001; and manager, critical care services, and director of ICU/CCU acute hemodialysis, Newcomb Medical Center, Vineland, N.J., from 1978 to 1997.

A past column author of AACN Advanced Critical Care, Bylone is one of six authors of AACN’s Essentials of Nurse Manager Orientation, an E-Learning program developed with American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE).

She frequently lectures and writes about AACN’s Healthy Work Environment standards and provides instruction for the Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) certification exam, developed with AONE Credentialing Center.

Bylone belongs to AACN’s Southeastern and South Central Connecticut chapters and Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter, from which she received its 2003 “Excellence in Critical Care Management” award. She served as AACN board treasurer in 2012–2013.

Bylone earned a bachelor’s degree in natural history and health/physical education, Lynchburg College, Va., in 1977, and an associate degree in nursing from Cumberland County, Millville, N.J., in 1982. In 2006, she received her master’s degree in management from Thomas Edison State College, Trenton, N.J., where she also earned a postgraduate certificate in human resource management in 2007. She also holds CCRN alumnus status following more than 20 years as an active CCRN.
