Description

Specialty certification enhances consumer protection in healthcare by validating that practice is consistent with the standards of excellence. Despite the purported importance of specialty certification, little research has been conducted on recent trends in specialty certification. In addition, little conclusive evidence exists on the positive effect that specialty certified registered nurses (RNs) have on nursing processes or patient outcomes. The purpose of this session is to discuss the findings of research from the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators® (NDNQI®) that examined trends in nursing specialty certification. The main questions were: What hospital characteristics and unit types support specialty certification? Does certification matter to patient outcomes?

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session the participant will be able to:

Describe the differences in demographic characteristics of specialty certified nurses and non-certified nurses.
Identify trends in nursing specialty certification related to hospital structural characteristics (e.g., Magnet® Designation, ownership, bed size) and different unit types.
Discuss the relationship between the prevalence of specialty certified nurses on nursing care units and nursing processes and patient outcomes.
