After more than four years of debate and discussion, the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification and Education was finalized in 2008. Due to be implemented in 2015, this new Model has implications for advanced practice nurses who care for the acutely and/or critically ill patient population now and in the future. As of January 2012, more than 40 national nursing organizations had endorsed the consensus document, and the full Model was featured prominently in the recent Institute of Medicine report on The Future of Nursing. The purpose of this session is to review the changes that the new regulatory model brings to advanced practice acute care education, practice and regulation and to discuss how we can best prepare to successfully implement the revised structure to provide optimal care for patients and families.
