Description

After more than four years of debate and discussion, the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification and Education was finalized in 2008. Due to be implemented in 2015, this new Model has implications for advanced practice nurses who care for the acutely and/or critically ill patient population now and in the future. As of January 2012, more than 40 national nursing organizations had endorsed the consensus document, and the full Model was featured prominently in the recent Institute of Medicine report on The Future of Nursing. The purpose of this session is to review the changes that the new regulatory model brings to advanced practice acute care education, practice and regulation and to discuss how we can best prepare to successfully implement the revised structure to provide optimal care for patients and families.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session the participant will be able to:

Identify how the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation will change the practice of CNSs and NPs who care for the acutely and/or critically ill patient population.
Discuss changes which will be necessary for nursing programs to make in their curricula to be ready for the new regulatory model by the 2015 deadline.
Consider opportunities to positively influence implementation of the model in your educational program, place of employment and/or regulatory jurisdiction.
