Transformational leadership is the ability to get people to want to change, to improve, and to be led. It involves assessing the motives of staff nurses, satisfying their needs, and valuing them. The bedside nurse is the leader in patient care. This session reviews how a facility’s shared-governance system engaged the bedside nurse in committees, taskforces, and councils. The critical care unit formed unit-based committees for ventilator-acquired pneumonia (VAP), central line–associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs), catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), hand hygiene, pressure ulcers, customer service, and standards of care.
