Respiratory complications are the leading cause of nonsurgical morbidity and mortality postoperatively, which increases the length of hospital stays and overall healthcare expenditures. Postoperative respiratory complications (PRCs) occur in as many as 10% of patients who undergo general surgical procedures and may be as high as 40% in those with abdominal surgical procedures. Ultimately, complications may evolve into postoperative respiratory failure (PRF) which has an in-hospital mortality rate of 40% versus a general postoperative mortality rate of 6% without PRF. This is a major healthcare issue because approximately 45 million patients undergo surgery every year, and over 1 million develop a PRC.
