Purpose: Establishing and sustaining healthy work environments translates directly into improved patient safety. To provide support to the critical care nurses in the Charlotte Metro and surrounding counties, the Piedmont Chapter of AACN provided several programs designed to offer support and resources as part of its 2008 chapter initiative.
Description: One of the key initiatives identified by the Piedmont chapter of AACN was to assure ongoing support to the large number of nurses who practice in critical and progressive care environments from 8 different hospitals. The 2008 calendar of events was planned around improving collaboration between physicians, nurses and patients through interactive dinner programs, seminars and recognition. Monthly dinner programs included guest speakers from each facet of the healthy work environment to include physicians, APRN’s, ICU patient experience presented by a past ICU patient, and motivational speakers. Topics were focused on improving communication, job enjoyment and peer support.
Collaboration in action was demonstrated during the 2008 Piedmont Chapter Spring Symposium where a panel discussion involving a bedside nurse, CNS, ANP, MD and Emergency Management Personnel discussed their ideas of the most pressing issues in critical care today.
Recognition during the dinner programs centered around the lifting up of students, new members, new CCRN’s, local, state and national award winners and Beacon recognition. This promoted celebration with peers at every meeting and assisted with the promotion of professional collaboration and communication through networking.
Evaluation/Outcomes: Continuing education credits were offered at each of the sponsored events above. Program evaluations reflected the strong significance of the topics and the practical application of the participants in their daily lives both at work and outside of work. The programs were a great success and the Piedmont Chapter board has carried the promotion of Attaining and sustaining a healthy work environment to its 2009 chapter initiative to continue supporting critical care and progressive care nurses in the Piedmont Chapter area.
