Clareen Wiencek, President-elect

Clareen Wiencek, RN, PhD, ACNP, ACHPN, serves a one-year term as president-elect of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) board of directors from July 1, 2015, through June 30, 2016. She previously served a three-year term as a director from July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2014, and a concurrent term as a director on the AACN Certification Corporation board from July 2013-June 2014. 

As associate professor of nursing at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Nursing and coordinator of the ACNP program, Wiencek has almost 40 years of experience as a bedside nurse in critical care, nurse manager, educator and researcher. She was the nurse manager for the acute care-based palliative care unit and program director for the Center for Integrative Pain Management at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in Richmond, Virginia, for four years before joining the faculty at UVA. She held various research, staff nurse and management positions at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC) in Cleveland for 20 years before moving to Virginia. She also held positions in California, Indiana and New York.

A recipient of AACN’s 2010 Circle of Excellence award, Wiencek served on the Chapter Advisory Team from 2006-2010, the Evidence-Based Practice Resource Work Group in 2010-2011 and the Nominating Committee in 2011-2012. Currently, she is a member of AACN’s Greater Richmond Chapter and an AACN ambassador. Wiencek has been a frequent contributor to AACN’s peer-reviewed journals and a presenter at AACN’s annual National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition.

A reviewer for Journal of Critical Care and an End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium National faculty member, Wiencek belongs to the Midwest Nursing Research Society, Society of Critical Care Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Her honors include the UHCMC APN Clinical Excellence Award in 2010 and the UHCMC Robert Gallienne Excellence in Critical Care Award in 2008.

Wiencek earned a doctorate in nursing from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, in 2008. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Cincinnati in 1976 and a medical-surgical nursing master’s degree and acute care nurse practitioner certification in 1979 and 2001, respectively, from Case Western.
