Clareen Wiencek, Director

Clareen Wiencek, RN, PhD, ACNP, ACHPN, serves a three-year term as a director on the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) board of directors from July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2014. She fulfills a concurrent, one-year term as director on the AACN Certification Corporation Board, a position that ends June 30, 2014.
Wiencek — nurse manager/clinician in the Thomas Palliative Care Unit at Massey Cancer Center, Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, Richmond — brings to the board more than 35 years of experience as a staff nurse, nurse manager and researcher.
Before joining VCU in 2011, she held various research, staff nurse and management positions at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC), Cleveland, for 10 years. Prior experience includes clinical and academic positions in California, Indiana and Ohio.
A recipient of AACN’s 2010 Circle of Excellence Award, Wiencek served on AACN’s Chapter Advisory Team from 2006 to 2010, the Evidence-Based Practice Resource Work Group in 2010–2011 and the Nominating Committee in 2011–2012.
She currently is a member of AACN’s Greater Richmond Chapter and an AACN ambassador. Wiencek has been a frequent contributor to AACN’s peer-reviewed journals and a presenter at AACN’s National Teaching Institute and Critical Care Exposition.
A reviewer for the Journal of Critical Care and an End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium National faculty member, Wiencek belongs to the Midwest Nursing Research Society, Society of Critical Care Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
In 2010, she was the recipient of the UHCMC APN Clinical Excellence Award and in 2008 received the UHCMC Robert Gallienne Excellence in Critical Care Award.
Wiencek earned a doctorate degree in nursing from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, in 2008. She earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Cincinnati in 1976 and a medical-surgical nursing master’s degree and acute care nurse practitioner certification in 1979 and 2001, respectively, from Case Western.
