Diane Byrum, RN, MSN, CCRN, CCNS, FCCM, serves a three-year term as a director on the AACN Certification Corporation board from July 2011 to June 2014. She served as the board’s secretary/treasurer in –2013. 

Byrum is a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) with Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville in North Carolina. Previously, she held CNS and management positions with Charlotte, N.C.-based Presbyterian Hospital and Carolinas Medical Center between 2004 and 2010 and at Northeast Medical Center, Concord, Lincoln Medical Center, Lincolnton and Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, between 1986 and 2004.

She co-owned Innovative Solutions, a Charlotte-based consultancy from 1995 to 2003 and worked with the medical examiners of Lincoln County from 1997 to 2009.

A prominent speaker and journal article author, Byrum also reviews books and awards — including the Circle of Excellence awards — for the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).

She has held board and committee positions with AACN’s Piedmont Carolinas Chapter, the American Heart Association, a local chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). Prior to her AACN Certification Corporation board service, she presented review courses for CCRN nursing certification.

Byrum facilitated completion of the application that earned her facility and two other Presbyterian Hospital facilities a 2013 award from the Critical Care Societies Collaborative, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, for elimination of ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Named an AACN Vision Partner in 1996, Byrum received the association’s Circle of Excellence – Excellence in Education and Excellence in Mentoring awards in 1998 and 2008.

Named an SCCM fellow in 2005, she ranks among the 2007 “Great 100 Nurses in North Carolina.” In 2013, Byrum received SCCM’s Norma J. Shoemaker Award for Critical Care Nursing Excellence.

In 1985, Byrum graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, where she also earned a Master of Science in nursing (adult health) in 1997.
