Sheryl Leary, Director

Sheryl Leary, RN, PhD, MS, CCRN, CCNS, PCCN, serves a three-year term as a director on the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) board from July 1, 2010, through June 30, 2013. She fulfills a second one-year term as a director on the AACN Certification Corporation board, a position that ends June 30, 2013.
Leary is a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) in the direct observation unit of the VA San Diego Healthcare System, a position she’s held since 2008. The spouse of a retired Navy officer, she has relocated frequently and acquired a broad-based clinical background in settings around the U.S.
A member of AACN’s San Diego Chapter, Leary previously helped to found AACN’s Central Coast of California Chapter, serving as its president. Active in AACN leadership, she sat on the 2008 AACN Nominating Committee. Leary has been an AACN ambassador since 2003 and also served on the CNS Scope and Standards Review Panel in 2008-2009.
Inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, she received numerous awards and scholarships including the “AACN Outstanding Local Member” award. She’s served as a subject matter expert, reviewer and contributor to several critical and progressive care textbooks.
Leary earned her diploma in nursing from St. Joseph School of Nursing, North Providence, R.I., Bachelor of Science in nursing from California State University Dominguez Hills and a Master of Science in nursing from San Diego State University. She is currently enrolled in the PhD program at the University of San Diego Hahn School of Nursing & Health Science.
