Sonia Astle, RN, MS, CCRN, CNRN, CCNS, serves a three-year term as a director on the AACN Certification Corporation board from July 1, 2012, to June 30, 2015.
A clinical nurse specialist at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, Va., Astle has four decades’ worth of clinical experience — including with the United States Air Force, from which she retired after 30 years of service — and has been associated with Inova Fairfax Hospital since 1996.
Prior to that, she worked as a clinical nurse specialist in critical care at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Va. She also served active duty during Operation Desert Storm at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida as a charge nurse in the ICU.
During her long clinical career, Astle has worked at hospitals in New York, Michigan and Nebraska, and served prior stints of active duty as a staff and charge nurse at Air Force bases in Alabama, New Hampshire, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
A member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Astle has been active with AACN’s Greater Washington Area Chapter, serving in numerous roles including president.
She has also participated in the Chapter Awards Survey Committee, the Healthy Work Environment Work Group, the Acute/Critical Care Nursing Scope and Standards Task Force, the National Teaching Institute (NTI) Program Planning Committee and has presented at NTI five times.
Astle earned her Master of Science in 1987 and her Bachelor of Science in 1985 from the University of New Hampshire in Durham after obtaining her nursing diploma in 1972 from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Hancock, Mich.
The Burke, Va., resident has been affiliate faculty at Northern Virginia Community College, George Mason University and Georgetown University, and since 2002 has served as an editorial board member for RN Journal.
