I am seeking information and guidelines on monitoring and setting up quality
assurance in a combined ICU/coronary care unit at an eight-bed hospital.

We have initiated a ventilator-weaning protocol for postoperative patients who
are returned to the surgical ICU intubated. This protocol is ordered by a
physician, then carried out by Respiratory Care and the patient�s nurse. What
advantages or disadvantages have you encountered with nonphysician-directed
weaning protocols?
