Back to AACN News Home
Vol. 15, No. 7, JULY 1998
Develop or refine your leadership skills at the Leadership Connections ’98 conference, scheduled October 17 through 20 at the Marriott Crystal Gateway Hotel in Arlington, Va.
Designed to provide nurses the tools they need in today’s healthcare environment as well as into the new millennium, this annual program offers specialized content for bedside nurses, managers, educators, researchers, advanced practice nurses, and chapter leaders. It also gives participants a chance to meet members of the AACN leadership team. Members of the Board of Directors including President Mary McKinley, RN, MSN, CCRN, as well as national office staff, will be available to discuss issues and answer questions during a Town Hall Meeting on October 19.
Up to 27 continuing education credits can be earned by attending this conference. An additional 6.5 CE credits are available for attending a 1-day preconference on Oct 17.
This preconference workshop on situational leadership will be conducted by Ronald Campbell, president of the Center for Leadership Studies. The workshop focuses on ways to more effectively manage people, use leadership skills to increase the productivity of followers, and match leadership styles to the needs of people and to the demands of any situation.
In addition to educational sessions, Ask the Experts networking opportunities are planned. Exhibits also will be open October 18 and 19. Companies interested in exhibiting can call (800) 809-2273 and ask for Kathy Compton, exhibits manager, at ext 367, or AJ Lipscomb, exhibits coordinator, at ext 509. AACN Partners with Industry companies plan to host focus groups at the conference.
At a Sunrise Session on October 19, Leadership Connections participants can learn about the new leadership competencies, which were recently approved by the AACN Board of Directors. Explaining the new leadership framework will be past AACN President Joanne M. Krumberger, RN, MS, CCRN, who chaired the 1997-98 Nominating Committee that developed the recommendations.
Keynote speakers for Leadership Connections ’98 are John Nance, an aviation analyst for ABC television and a best-selling author; Marilyn Moats Kennedy, publisher and founder of Kennedy’s Career Strategist; Denise Geolot, acting director of the Division of Nursing, US Health and Human Services; and Marla E. Salmon, RN, ScD, FAAN, professor, associate dean, and director of graduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Philadelphia, Pa. Reed Morton, director of the Healthcare Executive Career Resource Center, will speak at the Awards Luncheon Session on October 20.
Also on October 20, an interactive panel will provide participants a variety of perspectives including consumer and critical care nursing views on health policy.
The “early bird” discounted fee for registrations postmarked by September 15, 1998, is $335 for AACN members and $435 for nonmembers.
