Featured speakers at the first Showcase for Innovation and Best Practices will provide insight and expertise on a number of topics.

Sponsored by the Best Practice Network, the showcase is scheduled October 2 through 4, 1998, in Chicago, Ill. The Best Practice Network promotes information sharing among nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals by facilitating the exchange of ideas, encouraging collaboration in problem solving, and enabling healthcare professionals to learn from one another best practices that will positively affect patient care and community well-being. Showcase participants can earn up to 16.5 continuing education units.

Keynote speakers are Tim Porter O’Grady, EdD, PhD, FAAN; Gerry Faust; Jerry Kaiser; Tim Kight; and Des Cummings, Jr.

Porter O’Grady is a senior partner in an international healthcare consulting firm that specializes in organizational innovation and health service transformation issues. His speech is sponsored by the American Nephrology Nurses Association, a founding partner of the Best Practice Network.

Faust is head of Faust Management Corporation. He coaches business, professional, healthcare, and government organizations on ways to creatively analyze and manage change and innovation.

Kaiser, who is with the Institute of HeartMath, will preemphasize the role of emotions and the electrical hearts as the foundation of personal, prfessional, and organizational health. He will present a model that has enhanced physiological outcomes such as cardiovascular effectiveness and personal, professional, and organizational effectiveness.

Kight is founder and president of the Management Resources Group, which provides consulting services and resources to help organizations build and manage high-performance teams.

Cummings is leading a team of healthcare professionals to develop health-enhancing strategies into all sectors of the Celebration Health system and surrounding community in Florida. Celebration Health is a prototype for the
implementation of innovation in healthcare, education, and technology.

Concurrent sessions will focus on a range of practice issues including chest pain, congestive heart failure, obstetrics, geriatric care, ethics, and community-based trauma intervention. Among the presenters are Raymond Bahr, MD, FACP, of St. Agnes Healthcare, Baltimore, Md.; Julie Mohr, MSPH, of the Center for Evaluative Clinical Sciences, Hanover, N.H..; Helen Emmott, RN, of the Midwest Bioethics Center, Kansas City, Mo.; Carol Main-Benner, RN, MSN, CCRN, ACNP, of Advocate Health, Oakbrook, Ill.; Mathy Mezey, RN, EdD, FAAN, of the New York University Division of Nursing; David C. LaGrew Jr., MD, of Saddleback Memorial Medical Center, Laguna Hills, Calif.; Ellen Severino, RN, of California Health Decisions, Orange, Calif.; Karren Kowalski, RN, PhD, FAAN, of Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center, Chicago, Ill.; Annette M. Walker, MHA,, of MemorialCare, Fountain Valley, Calif.; Cathy Collins-Fulea, CNM, of Henry Ford Health System, Gross Pointe Farms, Mich.; and Julie Mohr, MSPH, of the Center for Evaluative Clinical Sciences, Hanover, N.H.

In addition, Carol S. Pearson, president of the Center for Archetypal Studies and Applications in Washington, D.C., senior editor of Inner Edge: A Resource for Enlightened Business Practice, and author of The Hero Within: Six Archetypes We Live By, will speak at the special Heroes in Healthcare Dinner, which will honor outstanding healthcare leaders from the Chicago area.. Roundtable discussions and Creative Solutions posters are also scheduled during the showcase.
