About AACN CSI Academy

The AACN Clinical Scene Investigator (CSI) Academy is a 16-month, hospital-based nursing innovation and leadership training program designed to empower bedside nurses as clinician leaders and change agents whose initiatives improve both patient and fiscal outcomes.

At its core, AACN CSI Academy leverages the staff nurse's expertise to enhance patient care, expanding that expertise with additional leadership skills gained through team education, coaching and mentoring.

AACN CSI Academy Outcomes

All CSI nurse-led innovations have generated better patient outcomes and reduced costs. To date, CSI Academy initiatives have saved participating hospitals an estimated $28 million annually related to patient care challenges such as:

  • Healthcare-associated infections
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Early progressive mobility
  • Delirium
  • Falls
  • Communication and handoffs

Nurses as Leaders

AACN believes that frontline nurses are critical players in creating lasting change and, ultimately, in transforming healthcare. AACN CSI Academy aims to provide staff nurses with the knowledge and support necessary to become leaders who guide their peers in creating unit-based change that is easily scaled hospital-wide for maximum impact.

The program expands on a successful pilot project developed by Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri and reflects AACN's proactive response to the Institute of Medicine's landmark report, "The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health," which confirms the vital role nursing can and should play in the transformation of healthcare.

Program Curriculum

In partnership with a regional CNO champion, AACN identifies area hospitals or a health system to participate in AACN CSI Academy. Selected hospitals engage a team of up to four nurses to work with academy faculty and an internal mentor to identify current patient care challenges, then develop, implement and evaluate solutions intended to achieve measurable clinical and financial improvements.

Program curriculum consists of content delivered in an experiential learning environment, including on site workshops, webinars and regular consultations in person, by phone and via email.

Educational topics encompass:

  • Leadership
  • Project Identification
  • Social Entrepreneurship
  • Data Collection and Analysis for Patient and Fiscal Impact
  • Project Implementation
  • Strategic Communication
