Ensuring optimal outcomes by providing competent, quality care to critically ill patients challenges even the most experienced critical care nurse, and even a small misstep can have dire consequences. AACN: Critical Care Pharmacology is a Web-based course for new and experienced critical care nurses looking to increase their knowledge on safe administration of medications commonly used in critical care. A brief review of pharmacology is followed by an in-depth look at how drugs used to treat critical care patients work to achieve the desired effects.
The most comprehensive, evidence-based pharmacology course, AACN: Critical Care Pharmacology was authored by clinical experts in the nursing, pharmacy, transfusion and cellular therapies fields and reviewed by a clinical pharmacist from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists/ASHP. The course:
- Provides in-depth coverage of the most common medications, best practices, and evidence-based interventions specific to critical care.
- Engages learners through realistic scenarios and offers practice in complex decision-making.
- Explains complex concepts through custom animations.

A collaborative effort between the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), Elsevier | MC Strategies, and AACN, AACN: Critical Care Pharmacology features eight lessons based on current standards around safe drug administration as set forth by professional, regulatory, and certifying bodies. Each lesson has a case study with patient updates throughout to demonstrate the topics being presented. The ninth “lesson” is actually a Critical Care Pharmacology assessment exam. Course Learning Objectives
After completing this course, users will be able to:
- Identify patient safety issues related to medication administration in critical care.
- Differentiate pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics and the effect on individuals or specific patient populations.
- Describe the expected effect of vasoactive medications in achieving desired patient outcomes.
- Correlate antidysrhythmic use and the expected effect on the cardiac cycle.
- Identify appropriate assessment tools for evaluating need for and effectiveness of medications administered for pain and sedation.
- Specify nursing assessments and interventions when administering paralytic medications.
- Implement appropriate processes to safely administer blood and blood products.
