Silent Treatment: How Silence Still Kills
As part of its commitment to healthy work environments, AACN has partnered in the execution of two national surveys on the prevalence of communication breakdowns among healthcare professionals and the impact on patient safety.
In 2011, AACN issued The Silent Treatment: Why Safety Tools and Checklists Aren’t Enough to Save Lives in partnership with the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and best practices training provider VitalSmarts. This study detailed the results of a survey of 6,500 nurses and nurse leaders on speaking up and resolving concerns related to dangerous shortcuts, incompetence or disrespect.
The Silent Treatment is a key follow-up to the 2005 groundbreaking study Silence Kills, conducted by AACN in partnership with VitalSmarts.
