Circle of Excellence: Central Coast of California Chapter

Excellence in Educational Programming

Central Coast of California Chapter of AACN, Salinas, Calif., actively promotes educational opportunities to our membership throughout the year. We offer monthly chapter presentations, sponsor certification webinars and host an annual summer symposium. These educational programs encompass the AACN mission, vision and values.

Our membership needs were assessed through surveys designed by our educational board members. The surveys collected data on areas of practice, levels of education and current interests. The survey also included areas for suggestions and requests.

Our chapter continues to utilize social media to collect our member surveys and educational requests online. Pictures, postings and comments always follow our meetings and presentations.

The planning and design for our educational layout was completed at our chapter board meetings. The speakers were physicians and registered nurses from the institutions and hospitals that the membership has networked with. In addition, free continuing education units are offered to attendees.

The Chapter hosted an amazing year of presentations on topics such as Healthy Work Environments, critical renal failure, antibiotic-resistant superbugs, minimally invasive cardiac bypass, history of nursing practice and a “Splash of Critical Care” summer symposium.

Presentations were held in the various hospitals in our membership radius, which proved to be a valuable benefit for increasing chapter membership.

Our highlight of the year was our Critical Care Summer Symposium, including a full day of evidence-based topics and the keynote speech by our founding member who is an AACN national board member.

Our attendees and student members were invested and engaged. The symposium was also offered locally so that members could work and attend on the same day.

Central Coast of California Chapter remains driven and dedicated to the educational needs of our members. Our educational programming is ever-evolving to meet the needs of critical care and progressive care nurses.

Our goal is to increase our educational agenda to include additional webinars, certification reviews and nurse-driven presentations.
