Circle of Excellence: Greater Miami Area Chapter

Excellence in Collaboration

Greater Miami Area Chapter of AACN, Miami, Fla., has boldly embraced the challenge of addressing the needs of the community in the Miami area through collaboration with our members as well as local, national and international organizations. The chapter supports the mission, vision and values of AACN, which encourages nurses to work together, influence peers in practice, seek education and promote community involvement.

The foundation of our success is the willingness of members to serve. This year we identified specific organizations with whom our chapter could collaborate to provide meaningful support, and in September 2011 we started a school supply drive for the Leisure City K-8 Center. We organized the collection for the center that serves the local migrant farming community.

In October, we organized a team for the Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure and raised more than $800 in just three weeks. In December, we collected food and other supplies in support of the Missionaries of the Poor, an international organization of monks who serve the poorest of the poor.

Upcoming community events include:

  • Volunteering at the Homestead Soup Kitchen.
  • Providing hot meals to families in need.
  • Offering a free community CPR class in collaboration with local hospitals.
  • Collaborating with nursing students to host an event in support of Ronald McDonald house charities.
  • Supporting families of children being cared for in the hospital.

This year we have been a resource to our community and are in a key position to influence and empower. AACN’s theme describes what we are all about. We are working together as we recognize that we are greater than the sum of our parts, which makes us stronger than we can ever imagine.

This makes us bolder, bold enough to take on challenges and commitments that drive us to excellence.
