A Community of Exceptional Nurses
Red River Chapter of AACN, Shreveport, La., serves a twin city region in the northwest corner of Louisiana. Our chapter strives diligently to bring the mission of AACN to our community.
This year's theme "Together. Stronger. Bolder." holds a special meaning for us.
Recently our chapter suffered a great loss when one of our members was the victim of a violent crime. She was a wonderful nurse and friend, and the chapter was filled with an intense sadness.
During strategic planning sessions that followed, the officers discussed AACN Healthy Work Environment standards and their personal meaning to our chapter. In an effort to create a healthy community, the chapter decided to support Providence House.
Providence House is a program that supports women and children who have experienced domestic abuse, violence or rape. Services provided include counseling, food, shelter, clothing and support — serving as quiet warriors who bestow not only physical needs, but a healing touch and kind word. In memory of our fallen colleague, the chapter started a project to collect needed items for Providence House.
During a chapter meeting, a presentation was given on domestic violence and the Providence House. Members were encouraged to post the needs list in their departments and set up bins for donations.
After four months, the chapter had collected three loads of gently used furniture along with other requested items such as personal hygiene needs, pajamas, toys, school supplies, office supplies, bedding, towels, cleaning products and baby clothes. Packaged in baskets, gift bags and holiday boxes, the donations were delivered just before Christmas as our “gift” for Providence House.
Supporting their efforts was the chapter’s way of helping promote a healthier community. This project was also our endeavor to honor our beloved colleague and heal ourselves as we continue the journey toward a healthy chapter.
