Promoting the Value of Certification: Greater Johnstown Chapter
Greater Johnstown Chapter highly values certification and its many benefits for members and the patients in their care. The majority of GJC’s officers and board members hold CCRN or PCCN certification, resulting in a 75 percent chapter certification rate.
Our chapter’s board recognized that, to expand certification, we needed to collaborate with Memorial Medical Center (MMC), the primary employer of many of our potential participants. GJC held a two-day review, and attendees from MMC were financially supported 100 percent.
The first evening of our review, a certification recognition dinner was held as a way to provide meaningful recognition. Anyone who held a certification, as well as MMC managers and administration, was invited.
After the review, GJC continued support for members preparing to test by holding review sessions. The chapter also recognized those who successfully passed a certification exam with roster plaques, gold CCRN or PCCN pins, badge holders and lanyards.
Thus far, there are 27 newly certified RNs — a 67.5 percent success rate — as a result of our efforts. We are continuing this legacy by offering another review course, using our successful format.
GJC members and AACN ambassadors continue to spread the word regarding certification.
We Dare To encourage certification, and we are successful.
