Collaboration: Greater Rochester Area Finger Lakes Chapter
GRAFL has many goals related to collaboration, including increased efforts with our local schools of nursing to enhance critical care and chapter interest and promoting certification and mentorship in our area chapters.
We have an annual Best Practice Sharing (BPSS) event, where chapter members present their best practices. Area faculty incentivize this event for students by arranging course credit and meaningful assignments for the BPSS. We also added a student liaison position to our core board that is currently held by a local senior nursing student.
GRAFL has embraced promoting certification in a number of ways. Our chapter provides financial assistance for PCCN/CCRN review courses, members are offered a discounted rate and, most importantly, members are reimbursed a portion of the registration cost with proof of exam registration.
In 2011, our neighboring Western New York (WNY) Chapter had fewer than 10 members and expressed concerns about having enough members, as well as low attendance at meetings. Their officers were invited to attend our strategic planning session that summer, and their board members joined our chapter and began attending functions.
GRAFL board members mentored these WNY board members via texting, emailing and live sharing at both GRAFL and WNY meetings. The WNY Chapter implemented the GRAFL board structure and has increased its membership to more than 130 — and growing. Incredible friendships and professional relationships have also resulted.
We are very proud to be one of this year’s Circle of Excellence Award recipients.
