Promoting the Value of Certification: Houston Gulf Coast Chapter
Together. Stronger. Bolder.
The board members of Houston Gulf Coast Chapter played a role in this initiative by promoting and advancing certification with a CCRN Review Course in February 2012.
- Before the course, 23 percent of members were certified.
- After the course, 32 percent of members were certified.
In September 2012, HGCC hosted a Certification Celebration Dinner with a “CCRN Pinning” ceremony for those who had taken our course and passed the exam.
The HGCC president has taken the “DARE TO Become Certified” challenge to her MICU.
- CCRN review questions are posted each week on the AACN bulletin board in the nurses’ lounge; answers are posted the following week.
- They established a “Wall of Honor” with framed certificates and pictures of all the CCRN nurses who work in the MICU at The Methodist Hospital.
Several area hospitals add certification credentials to nurses’ name badges, offer review course and exam fee reimbursements and host annual programs to recognize certified nurses.
HGCC will continue to be a champion for certification and inform nurses of the benefits, as we display AACN certification brochures at monthly meetings and booklets to keep track of CERPs and CEs for certification renewal. We recognize newly certified nurses and offer them one-year free chapter membership.
