A Community of Exceptional Nurses
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (Office of Healthcare Quality/Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health and Partnership for Patients) and Critical Care Societies Collaborative (CCSC) — composed of American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, American College of Chest Physicians, American Thoracic Society and Society of Critical Care Medicine — has been sponsoring an awards program recognizing teams of critical care professionals and healthcare institutions that show excellence, leadership and notable, sustained improvements in preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), specifically infections of critically ill patients.
Hospitals, units and teams that successfully reduced or eliminated HAIs were eligible to apply for the awards, which recognized benchmark systems of excellence that reduced targeted HAIs for 25 months or longer.
Recipients also demonstrate national leadership in sharing and disseminating information and in using evidence-based guidelines to improve clinical practice.
