Education – The Foundation of NTI

NTI and the Advanced Practice Institute feature six days of learning and collaborative exchange, the latest innovations in practice, technology and healthcare delivery, research advances and interdisciplinary approaches. Update your knowledge, refine your skills or learn something totally new through educational sessions designed for every type of adult learner. 

An NTI Education Features:

  • Up to 30 hours of Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) and Continuing Education Recognition Points (CERPs).
  • Sessions that are essential for newer nurses and experienced nurses with a new clinical focus.
  • Higher-level material for the intermediate and expert-level practitioner and interdisciplinary presenters to broaden the range of perspectives.
  • Many ways to build a focused curriculum around your clinical or professional role, priority educational needs or hospital-wide or unit-improvement initiatives.
  • Learning opportunities for every type of learning style, including lectures, panels, technical exhibits, poster sessions and self-study.
  • The Advanced Practice Institute (API) offers clinical, hands-on, leadership development and pharmacology sessions all in one place.

Teaching/Learning Methods

NTI faculty use instructional methods to facilitate interaction and exchange among adult learners. Instructional methods include lecture with question-and-answer dialogue, case study discussions, roundtables, group dialogue, debates, panel presentations, open forums, poster presentations, interactive learning laboratories and computer-assisted learning.

Curriculum and Session Summaries

The NTI/API curriculum offers breadth and depth of content suitable for novice and expert nurses who care for patients with critical or complex health problems. The NTI/API presents the latest in practice and addresses healthcare within national and global contexts.

Content descriptions and learning outcomes for each session are published in the Session Summaries section of the program book provided on-site to participants. When provided by faculty, session summaries with key points and bibliography are posted online. Please contact individual faculty to request PowerPoint files and other session materials. Level of Educational Content

As a guide for participants, NTI/API learning sessions are assigned one of the learner levels listed below. Participants may attend sessions at any level. Each session summary indicates a session's level.

Advanced Beginner: New to the field or topic or to the care of acute and critically ill patients. Able to recognize meaningful education components.

Proficient: Has worked in the field and is proficient in skills, research and practice pertaining to care of acute and critically ill patients.

Expert: Has special knowledge or ability and performs skills. Relies on background experience of clinical situations to determine appropriate actions.

All Levels: The content in a session is applicable for learners at any level.

Session Formats

NTI learning opportunities offer the following formats:

Preconferences: Offered on Saturday and Sunday before the NTI/API main conference begins. Three- or six-hour sessions provide broad coverage of a topic reflecting focused state of the art content (e.g., pain management, shock, trauma, patient-focused care, pharmacology). Content may not be specific to a product. Faculty allow one-third to one-half time for interactive exchange. Preregistration required.

SuperSessions: Large sessions for all participants that feature national speakers. These challenging and motivating presentations are geared toward professional success, future trends and/or national and global issues. SuperSessions held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

Concurrent Sessions: Concurrent sessions are offered each day on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Sessions may be 45 or 75 minutes.

Mastery Sessions: Mastery sessions offered Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Sessions are 165 minutes with one 15-minute break.

Sunrise Sessions: Early morning breakfast sessions offered before Tuesday and Wednesday concurrent sessions. Sessions are 60 minutes, include breakfast and are funded by unrestricted educational grants from corporate supporters.

Pharmacology Content: Sessions are designated as category "RX" for the convenience of advanced practice nurses who requires this content for licensure and/or recertification. Educational sessions meeting pharmacology content requirements receive continuing education designation in pharmacology.

Poster Presentations: Posters displayed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the Resource Center. Posters report a wide range of completed research and practice innovations by nurses in challenging, unique and interesting situations.

E-Learning and Mobile Resources Lab: The new E-Learning and Mobile Resources Lab offers hands-on use of AACN's e-learning resources.

NTI Voices : Every print issue of NTI's daily newspaper includes a clinical article awarding 1.0 contact hour of continuing nursing education (CNE) credit. Look for copies at the convention center and major NTI hotels. You can also view NTI Voices without the CNE article online.

ExpoEd Exhibitors Education: ExpoEd sessions in the Critical Care Exposition are 30-minute educational and inservice-style learning opportunities on topics relevant to high acuity and critical care. ExpoEd sessions are listed in the ExpoGuide given on-site to all participants and presented in exhibitor booths, special education stages and the ExpoEd classroom in the exhibit hall.

Continuing Education Credit

AACN is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. AACN has been approved as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the State Boards of Nursing of California (#01036) and Louisiana (ABN12).

AACN programming meets the standards for most other states requiring mandatory continuing education credit for relicensure. Continuing education credit — calculated on a 60-minute contact hour — is determined by the number of sessions a participant attends. Typically, participants earn from 25-30 contact hours at NTI.

What are CERPs? 

A continuing education recognition point (CERP) equals 60 minutes of continuing education. By awarding CERPs instead of traditional Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) credit, Sunrise and ExpoEd sessions can offer a wider range of learning activities.

CERPs are recognized by the AACN Certification Corporation, AACN's credentialing arm, to encompass a wide spectrum of continuing education activities performed by nurses in high acuity and critical care. State boards of nursing and other certification organizations also may recognize CERPs as meeting continuing education requirements.

AACN recommends consulting with the state board or other credentialing organization before submitting CERPs to fulfill continuing education requirements.

CE/CERP Certificates

Track your evaluation of every NTI, ExpoEd and Sunrise session you attend on the session evaluation worksheets at the back of the schedule booklet provided on–site to each participant. Follow the online prompts to enter your program and session evaluations and print your certificate.

You must complete both program and session evaluations to receive CNE and/or CERP credit.
